How Hard is Your Water?

We get several calls from customers saying they believe they have hard water. First, what is hard water? This is when the water has a high mineral content. So as rain drains down through the surface to the aquifers it absorbs minerals like calcium, manganese and magnesium carbonate. The hardness of the water depends on how much of these minerals is in the water.  Hard water in your home, as potable water, is not necessarily harmful but can cause significant issues. The problems can arise when the hard water reacts with cleaning products, creates build up and can wear down fixtures and appliances. Cleaning products may not be as effective when used with hard water, causing your normal cleaning chores to be more frustrating and expensive. The buildup of the minerals from the hard water can be deposited on your dishes, clothing, fixtures and even your skin and hair.  The other issue with hard water isn’t just on the outside of the faucets but what is it doing to the inside of your plumbing. These minerals start to build up inside your pipes and appliances. This can cause water flows to drop, clog and even increase the stress on the pipes and fixtures. If the hot water heater has to heat up all the scale buildup, as well as the water, your energy costs are going to increase. 1/4″ scale = up to 39% energy loss and 1/2″ = up to 70% energy loss!

Now to explain a little further for us all in Florida. If you look at the picture below, you can see that Florida as a state has hard to very hard water. Ideal measurements would be 7 grains per gallon (gpg)…but here in Florida…well, it’s way more than that!

Shocking! We know! Check out these facts:

7,000 Grains = 1 Pound of Rock

Average US Water Supply

Hardness = 15 Grains per Gallon (gpg)

467 Gallons = 1 Pound of Rock

How can we here at Filter Pure help? We would first need to test your water to see how hard your water really is. We then need to find out your water usage. For example, how many people reside in the home? How many hours per day would it be operating? You would need to be able to provide the total number of fixtures, including toilets, sinks, dish washer, washing machine and showers? If you can find out your water usage per month, that would also be helpful? The more information we can get the better. Based on those readings we can suggest a water softener that would best suit your needs. If you have any further questions regarding hard water, water softeners, or whole home filtration please contact us 800-942-7873.  Have any questions? Click the button below and ask away!

Save the Planet, One Bottle at a Time

It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles. Altogether, Americans’ used over 50 billion plastic water bottles last year alone. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great! So, how does one cut out all the plastic bottles from their life but still get great tasting water straight from their tap? By purchasing a high performance drinking water system, that goes under your your kitchen sink. This system uses the same water purification process as Dasani and Nestle and it is called reverse osmosisThis process is used in water purification, manufacturing plants, and chemical laboratories.  One great unit that we recommend is the the PURA QCRO4V. This 4 stage quick change reverse osmosis system can be customized to adapt to changing water conditions. The quick change filters feature the innovative PURA twist and lock design, making filter changes and service fast and easy.

  • Choice of a 50 gpd or 75 gpd membrane
  • Standard Lead Free Air Gap Faucet
  • Color coded tubing for easier installation
  • Quick connect fittings and a self piercing feed valve
  • Interchangeable filters allows the system to be customized to your local water conditions
  • Produces high quality water for better tasting coffee, tea, juices, soups, sauces and pasta and clearer ice cubes
  • System includes a sediment pre-filter, carbon block pre-filter, RO membrane and carbon block postfilter

The first stage of filtration is the sediment filter, which reduces suspended particles such as dirt, dust, and rust. The second stage of filtration is the carbon filter. This filter reduces volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), chlorine, and other compounds that might impact the taste or odor of the tap water. Chlorine should be removed from the water before the water enters the membrane. This will help preserve the life of the membrane. The center and third stage of a reverse osmosis system is the semi-permeable (RO) membrane. It is responsible for rejecting up to 98% of the total dissolved solids in the water. So you can save the planet, save money and drink healthier water! For more information about this system call 800-942-7873 or click the link below to ask us a question.

The Terrible Trio

Recently, a client came to us in regards to their company’s well water. They wanted to make sure the water was safe from pathogens and other microorganisms and free from odor. They were looking for an alternative other than using chlorine or chloramine.

After reviewing a water sample, the test results showed high levels of iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, or what we like to call — THE TERRIBLE TRIO!!

Iron, as one of the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust, is commonly found in well water supplies. While iron generally poses no health threat to humans and animals, it is a stain-causing and sediment-forming nuisance that feeds numerous strains of bacteria. Manganese is far less abundant than iron, but still quite common and easy to recognize from the telltale black staining. Consuming elevated levels of manganese has been linked to neurological disorders. Hydrogen sulfide’s infamous rotten egg smell distinguishes it from iron, manganese and most other contaminants that are found in well water. In addition to its unpleasant odor, hydrogen sulfide concentrations as low as 1.0 ppm are quite corrosive; even very low levels can tarnish silverware and stain porcelain fixtures. So, how can you fight the terrible trio? We suggest two solutions, ultraviolet light treatment system with pre-filtration and ozone disinfection systems. The difference between the two systems essentially is: UV kills germs with light energy, whereas ozone kills germs and odors as an oxidizer. The systems can be used alone or together. Ozone and UV technologies are comparatively priced; however, ozone systems have a slightly larger footprint than UV. Operational costs of each system vary with the local price of electricity. The minimal maintenance and reduced chemical requirements of an ozone system, however, can create cost savings that can result in a system payback of three to six years. UV lamps must be replaced every 12 months to two years and must be figured into the maintenance costs for these systems. For more information on UV and Ozone systems, please contact us at Filter Pure Systems @ 1-800-942-7873 or email at vince@filterpure.com

What are Fuel Farms?

A fuel farm (also known as an oil depot) is an industrial facility or holding tank for the storage of oil and/or petrochemical products. Most air bases and airports have their own dedicated fuel farms with road tankers and other vehicles that transport the fuel from the fuel farm to the aircrafts. With millions invested in these aircrafts, the quality and cleanliness of the fuel is vital to maintaining the operational standards of an airbase or airport.

Filter Pure has multiple industrial filtration systems that enhance and clean the fuel. These systems would be installed at the point of entry of the fuel farms. A couple of different kinds of systems are the H88 or the M88. These systems are designed for the removal of particulates from oils, fuels and other industrial process fluids. The M88 is a liquid bag housing for lower pressure applications. It removes dirt, pipe scale, and other substances from the processed liquids. You can use either a liquid bag filter or a strainer basket. The H88 is a hydraulic cartridge housing and designed for the removal of particulates and water from oils and industrial fluids. Both of these systems are constructed to protect all downstream equipment. Another positive attribute of these systems  is the ability to be customized based on the specification/or requirements needed.  Some of the specifications are as follows and can be customized for your use:

  •  Flow rates that range from 120 to 4,600 gpm
  • Multi-round flow rates from 360 to 4,500 gpm
  • The pressure ratings 150 psi
  • Carbon steel, 304 and 316 stainless steel construction
  • Multi-round housings feature bearing assisted davit assembly
  • ASME code U or UM, depending upon model

The necessity of utilizing these filtration systems for fuel farms is important due to the great quality fuel it produces. For more information on how we can help you with these systems or others like them please contact Amy Easter at amy@filterpure.com or call 800-942-7873.

The Greatest Water Filter Ever Made!

Could it be that Everpure has created the greatest commercial water filter ever made, the MC2 filter (EV9612-56)?  What makes a good water filter great? The same thing that makes any product great, LOVE! If you have ever eaten at a chain restaurant, then you have more than likely tasted the water generated from this filter, and according to domestic and global sales on this filter, we all loved it! So how did this filter become the greatest commercial food service filter of all time?!

It all started in 1933,  Mr. CB Oliver founded a water treatment company in Chicago, Illinois, called Tested Appliances. His own idea of a pre-coat multi-fold complex filter body was the basis for the Everpure filter of today. The multi-fold complex filter body gave the filter greater surface area, basically six times the area that you get with a standard carbon block filter.

In 1957, Tested Appliances Company changed its name to Everpure. Then in 1963, Everpure moved its headquarters to Oak Brook, Illinois to work directly with McDonald’s Corporation to perfect a water filter system for all of its stores. That collaboration led to the T-9 water purifier that was rolled out into all McDonald’s restaurants in 1966.  In 1967, Everpure developed a unique form of microscopy purification, the Micropure multi-fold multiplexing filter body, with pre-coat technology. This technology completely revolutionized the water treatment industry.

Ever wonder what “MC2” stands for? “McDonald’s Cold”, the 2 stands for an even newer Everpure innovation AgION silver, ion antimicrobial. AgION antimicrobial in the filter means that even if your employees forget to change the filter, the AgION will kill any bacteria accumulating within the filter. So now you know why a McDonald’s Coke tastes like a Coke right out of the can.

Water is 87% of McDonald’s soda and the MC2 filtered water is what makes it so delicious. At a ½ micron rating, both NSF 42 and 53 this filter even takes cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia out of the water. What it really means is that the restaurants that “LOVE” their customers, like McDonald’s, use the greatest filter ever made to insure that the consistent quality they want their guests to enjoy is delivered. For more info on the greatest water filter ever, the MC2, contact us at 800-942-7873 or click the link below to ask us a question!
