Is your water ready for Mom!
As the most popular holiday of the year to dine out, Mother’s Day will entice nearly half of Americans to dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery on this Sunday, May 8th. Consumers plan to spend $4.2 billion on jewelry, $4.1 billion on special outings such as dinner or brunch and $2.4 billion on flowers. Total spending is expected to reach $21.4 billion. According to NRF’s survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics, consumers are expected to spend an average $172.22 per person, on par with last year. Whether consumers pick mom’s preferred buffet breakfast or her favorite fine-dining dinner, America’s restaurants are stepping up to the plate to help families celebrate the special occasion. And while a majority of consumers make their Mother’s Day meal plans less than a month out, nearly one in five have probably been planning their celebratory meals for more than one month and the first thing that Mom is going to taste is the water! With everything that’s been happening in the news lately regarding drinking water, make sure that your Restaurant’s table water is ready to make a great first impression also. You can be sure that if your water is off color with a bad taste or odor this weekend, it’s not only going to reflect poorly on the person who recommended your restaurant for Mom, but may have the saving grace of being a great conversation starter comparing your water to that of Flint Michigan’s water if they stick around to eat.
Either way it is certainly something that is easy to avoid, as easy as making sure that your water filters have been changed or if you don’t already have one, installing an Everpure water filtration system to take care of all of the beverages and ice that you are serving. If you already have an Everpure system, it is essential that filters be replaced periodically. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water.
Prefilter, ( First bowl to left, system above)
The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.
Submicron Cartridges ( 3 in the middle system pictured above)
The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.
Scalestick ( cartridge in last bowl to right pictured in system above)
The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.
You should also replace your water filters whenever you notice a decline in performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure, or an unusual taste in the water. You should also, per the CDC, replace your water filter after any boil water advisory alert is lifted in your area. Remember: taste and odor may tip you off to the presence of chlorine in your water, but most contaminants are tasteless and odorless.
For the benefit of our customers, we have set-up automatic electronic reminders that are sent when we see that their filters are due to be replaced, based on order history. We can even set-up Auto-Ship for customers that know they will need water filters by a certain date, but may not remember to place an order.
If you have a question regarding how often you should replace your filter or not sure about the filter system that you have please email your questions and a picture of the system to info@filterpure.com or call our team at 1-800-942-7873 and have a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Can water filters help prevent breast cancer?
Could something as simple as putting an activated carbon based water filter on your kitchen sink prevent or lower the risk of breast cancer for you and your family? Thousands of American municipalities add chlorine to their drinking water to get rid of microbes and kill bacteria in our drinking water. But this inexpensive and highly effective disinfectant also interacts with organic compounds to create trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). THMs and HAAs are formed by reactions between chlorine and organic material such as humic acids and fulvic acids (both generated from the decay of organic matter) to create halogenated organics. —which when ingested encourage the growth of free radicals that can destroy or damage vital cells in the body. Recent studies have shown that chlorine and its by-products increase the risk of developing malignant melanoma, bowel, breast and bladder cancer. Researchers have found links between common chlorine disinfectant and breast cancer, which affects one out of every eight American women. A recent study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut found that women with breast cancer have 50-60 percent higher levels of organochlorines (chlorine by-products) in their breast tissue than cancer-free women. The fact of the matter is that if you live anywhere where the water is being treated with Chlorine you can inexpensively remove the risk of your exposure to it by installing a carbon-based filter containing activated carbon, which absorbs chlorine and other contaminants. Activated carbon surface properties are both hydrophobic and oleophilic; that is, they “hate” water but “love” oil. When flow conditions are suitable, dissolved chemicals in water flowing over the carbon surface “stick” to the carbon in a thin film while the water passes on. This process is called adsorption. As a result of the adsorption process, activated carbon is an effective method in removing chlorine and it’s by-products (TTHM’s) and volatile organic compounds (carbon based VOC’s), both, man-made and naturally occurring. Activated carbon is a natural material derived from bituminous coal, lignite, wood, coconut shell etc., activated by steam and other means and each one have different adsorption properties (e.g. bituminous carbon for high chlorine reduction capacity). Some manufacturers use various blends of carbon to achieve specific water quality and contaminants reduction (e.g. coconut shell carbon for “sweet taste”).
Everpure has an entire line of filters containing Micro-Pure® carbon designed to remove chlorine and chlorine by products including THMs generating premium quality drinking water for your home and office. Filter Pure recommends the Everpure OW, (Office Water) Family of water filters. Their unique filter blend uses activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor and offensive contaminants down to ½ micron in size even taking out water borne cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. All the OW replacement water filter cartridges are NSF Certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53, the OW200L (P/N EV9619-01) , OW2-PLUS (P/N EV9634-01) , and OW4-PLUS (P/N EV9635-01). We also carry the 4C cartridge (EV9600-00) and new line of Everpure (Fibredyne II) FC-L cartridges. Ebola Home Water Treatment
The Ebola virus cannot spread through the water supply, according to information released by the Water Research Foundation. The internationally recognized leader in water research has provided the following information in response to inquiries about Ebola that some water utilities are receiving: Ebola is not a foodborne, waterborne or airborne illness. It is transmitted to humans from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, vomit and feces. The Ebola virus cannot survive long in water because it can only replicate within host cells — from a human or an animal. Because of Ebola’s fragility when separated from its host, bodily fluids flushed by an infected person would not contaminate the water supply.
Researchers believe Ebola survives in water for only a matter of minutes because water does not provide the same environment as bodily fluids, which have higher salt concentrations. Once in water, the virus will take in water, causing the cells to swell and burst — killing the virus.
But if you are still concerned about the Ebola virus or any other harmful bacteria or virus entering your home through the water supply you may want to consider a Whole house UV disinfection system.
Does UV light kill Ebola?
UV Disinfection has been found to be effective against the Ebola Virus, and many other harmful bacteria and viruses. UV Disinfection is a method that uses ultraviolet (UV) light at sufficiently short wavelength to kill microorganisms. It is also referred to as Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). It is used in many applications, such as water and air purification. UV Disinfection utilises short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UV-C), which has a wavelength in the range of 100nm to 280nm. UV-C is harmful to microorganisms and is effective in destroying the nucleic acids in these organisms so that their DNA is disrupted. Studies have confirmed that UV-C radiation is effective in deactivating Ebola virus. One extremely inexpensive whole house UV system is the PURA® Product’s UV20 Series™ designed to provide disinfected water at a flow rate of 8 – 10 gallons per minute. This system is ideal for whole house water treatment. In addition to disinfection, the double and triple models provide filtration for the removal of sediment and chemical contaminants. This ultraviolet water treatment system makes a perfect companion to water softeners, distillers, reverse osmosis and ozone systems. The UV20 Series™ has proven to be PURA® Product’s most popular product line and has created an industry standard in whole-house disinfection.

Military Installation Contamination
The military has documented that there are several bases on the NPL (National Priorities List) that have water contamination issues, for example: Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, Jacksonville NAS in Florida and Camp Lejeune Military Reservation in North Carolina.
The different types of contaminates that have been found include solvents, metals (such as lead,) cadmium, pesticide residue and even military substances such as nerve agents and unexploded ordnance. Petrochemical storage tanks could be old and rusted so they can be leaking as well.
The most discussed base is Camp Lejeune. The dumping began as early as the 1950’s. This is before the EPA was enforcing standards on bases. Not only military personnel but civilians in the surrounding areas complained about the taste and odor of the water. Then the serious issues began when people were getting violently ill. Local health officials were treating individuals with various maladies from gastrointestinal problems to blood disorders. One of the causes was Groundwater Leaching. This is an extreme broad based environmental concern where the water from the rain seeps into the ground and can dissolve chemicals, carrying them into the ground water supply. Adding to these issues was that these areas have special environmental sensitivity, such as wetlands, natural habitat for endangered and other wildlife species. As the ground or well water is pumped for consumption, we need to make sure that it gets filtered correctly to control, diminish and eliminate the different contaminates. The DOD has spent approximately $42 billion in environmental restoration over the past 10 years. They are dedicated to the cleanup of nearly 20,000 active sites that have been identified by the National Priorities List that is regulated under the Federal Superfund Law. So what solutions can Filter Pure provide to help ensure safe potable water? There are different types of equipment and filters that can reduce or eliminate toxins and contaminates to protect and sanitize the water you use. From oil absorbing cartridges, ultrafiltration to ozone, UV and activated carbon; these products can be used individually or combined together. First thing to know is what is in your water? A water sample is crucial in defining what the different levels of elements are so that we can start to provide you with solutions created specifically for your needs. Don’t Forget About the O-Ring!
First, what is an O-ring? An O-ring is a doughnut, or torus shaped seal typically used to prevent the passing of air or fluid. O-rings are used to keep fluid or air IN or OUT of a defined space. This device helps to keep the water tight or air tight integrity of a filter housing or filter application. O-rings come in a wide variety of sizes and different types of materials; Types of Material
- Buna-N®
- Ethylene, Propylene
- Silicon Encapsulated with FEP, an FDA-approved material
- Silicone (Solid)
- Teflon® (Solid)
- Teflon® Encapsulated with FEP
- Viton® (Solid)
To extend the o-ring’s effectiveness there are some things you can do: Remove and inspect the o-ring at every filter change or every time the housing is opened, as well as applying the manufacturer’s approved lubricant. The protectant/gel, usually made of silicon is inexpensive and is easy to apply. If there are signs of any wear or improper form of the o-ring, the o-ring must be replaced immediately prior to restarting the filter system. The life of an o-ring varies based on how you take care of it and what it is made of. It is very important to your operation to make sure you have the proper o-ring for your filtration application. If you have any questions on changing out your o-rings or whether you are using the proper o-ring for your system, I invite you to submit a question below or call our team at 1-800-942-7873.
