Starbucks plans to reopen 90 percent of It’s US locations by Mid June!

Starbucks says they plan to start reopening many of its company-owned locations with modifications starting Monday amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Starbucks had temporarily closed half of its 8,000 US company-owned stores. The company plans to have 90% of its locations reopened by early June. Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson is optimistic that customers will return and is taking a very cautious and methodical approach to safely re-opening stores. In communities where there are higher COVID-19 casualties, Starbucks won’t “turn the dial up,” Johnson noted. Instead, the chain will maintain drive-thrus, mobile order with contactless pickup, and curbside service where there are parking lot facilities, he added. “But in other communities where we see the number of COVID cases continue to decline, we might now open our cafe for limited seating. We might have a to-go model. And so we’re going to be in this phase where we’re tuning the store protocols and what we offer customers as we monitor the situation community by community,” Johnson added.

Re-opening your Restaurant or Food Service Facility? If you are an owner operator and have been shut down for an extended period of time, Pentair Everpure has the following guidance for your water treatment system;

Filtration systems are designed to be operated on a continuous basis with only relatively short periods of down time (overnight and holidays). When a system is shut down for an extended period of time, there is a potential for microbiologic growth. To address concerns with system operation after the shutdown, please follow the below instructions. This is applicable to all Pentair filtration systems (i.e., pre-filters, carbon-based cartridges and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems).

Periodic Flushing In cases where the customer knows that the system will be down for an extended time and is able to get to the system on a periodic basis, follow the below flushing procedure every 3-4 days:

Filtration Systems
Flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
Empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush through all ports.
Shutdown for Less Than or Equal to 7 Days:

Filtration Systems
When you put the system back into operation, flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
When you put the system back into operation, empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 10 minutes through all ports.

Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days:

All Systems (Filtration and RO)
Remove all existing filtration elements that are present in the system (pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges) and dispose. Disinfect the system as instructed in the applicable Installation and Operations Guide for that specific system.
After the disinfection process is complete, replace the filtration elements with all new pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges. Flush the system as instructed in the applicable IO Guide to complete the procedure.

Softeners
Initiate a manual regeneration.
Shutdown for Greater Than 30 Days:
Softeners
Disinfect per the Installation and Operation Guide for that specific unit. Generally speaking, it is adding some bleach to the brine tank before initiating a manual regeneration.

Assumptions
Pentair assumes the following in providing this guidance: Incoming water is potable.

There is no boil-water advisory or boil-water order issued by the applicable public health or governmental authority.

System is being maintained within normal operating temperature and other conditions as set forth in the applicable specification sheet.

If you have concerns or cannot confirm these assumptions for the system, follow the instructions above under the section entitled “Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days”.

Waffle House Covid-19 Index continues to go Green as Dine In Customers Return!

Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer is happy to see Dine In Customers returning this last week as Waffle House opened stores back up for Dine in. In this past week they have opened up restaurants in Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, and parts of Tennessee. It’s been a steady stream of customers happy to sit down to that wonderful Waffle House comfort food experience we all know and love! Waffle House restaurants are adhering to social distancing measures by removing every other table and bar stool at the counter, allowing people to sit at a comfortable distance. Waffle House is turning to the government to advise on when’s best to reestablish normal seating in restaurants, in order to return to full capacity, a concern most industry professionals share.

If you are an Owner or Operator working to re-open your facility you may want to review the “Initial Opening/Operating Guidance” guidelines and checklist! An excellent resource developed by the Florida Restaurant Association working with Industry Experts and covers reopening defined by the Federal Government and applied by State and Local Jurisdictions. Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step. The Florida Task Force Plan for Florida’s Recovery, Phase 1 !

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to start re-opening on Monday, allowing restaurants and retail in most counties to resume business with certain limitations to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The Governors guidelines allow restaurants to open indoor seating at 50% capacity with six-foot distancing between tables and parties no larger than 10. It also allows for outdoor seating with appropriate social distancing.

Phase 1 Outline;

Bars, Pubs and Nightclubs

Bars, pubs, and nightclubs that derive at least 50 percent of sales from alcohol should remain closed.

Restaurants

Restaurants and food establishments should operate at no more than 50 percent capacity, with appropriate social distancing and a minimum of 6 feet separating parties, as the virus is most transmissible indoors under close sustained contact.

  • Parties should not exceed 10 people. Businesses should limit inside waiting areas for patrons waiting to be seats.
  • Businesses should thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces after each use.
  • Businesses should consider a reservations-only business model or call-ahead seating to manage spacing in restaurant.
  • Businesses should consider posting signs to remind staff and patrons of safety and sanitization protocols.
  • Businesses should screen employees before work and should consider requiring employees to wear face masks or cloth face coverings while inside or within close proximity to members of the public.
  • Bar areas should remain closed.
  • Outdoor dining areas should be prioritized.
  • Menus, if laminated, should be cleaned after each usage. Paper menus should be designed for single use and then disposed of immediately after use.
  • Businesses should avoid cafeteria-style dining arrangements. If salad bars or buffets are permitted efforts to mitigate risk should include barriers to block virus spread from sneezes and coughs and service utensils should be handled by staff and/or washed frequently.

Tennessee Restaurants are re-opening !

Tennessee restaurants began to reopen yesterday adhering to the Governors guidelines ! The new guidelines include limiting capacity to 50% and ensuring tables are no less than 6 feet apart, with no more than half a dozen people per table. They also say businesses should screen both employees and customers for signs of illness. Bar areas will remain closed and employees must wear masks and gloves at all times. Texas Restaurants Re-Open this Friday, May 1st!

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday announced that restaurant dining rooms there will be allowed to reopen Friday at 25% capacity superseding any local orders in his state. The reopening will come the day after the state’s shelter-in-place order, which has been in place since mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus, lapses. In partnership with the Texas Restaurant Association and health officials across the State, restaurant owners and operators have agreed to make a set of commitments to their employees and customers and earn the endorsement of the “Texas Restaurant Promise” during the COVID-19 recovery period. When customers see this endorsement, they can be certain that the restaurant is taking all necessary steps to protect their employees and customers and that they are taking a leadership role in protecting their community. The Texas Restaurant Promise also empowers customers to learn what they can do to help keep everyone safe.

Waffle House Crisis Index for Covid-19 now at lite Green! Re-Opens 330 Restaurant Dining Rooms in Georgia!

The Waffle House Crisis Index is well known down here in the South as an informal leading indicator of just how bad things really are, usually a weather indicator. All of its wonderful restaurants, (author loves their waffles!), stay open every hour of every day. After extreme weather, like floods, tornados and hurricanes, Waffle Houses are quick to reopen, even if they can only serve a limited menu. That makes them a remarkably reliable if informal barometer usually for weather damage but now for Covid-19! The index was invented by Craig Fugate, a former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2004 after a spate of hurricanes battered America’s east coast. “If a Waffle House is closed because there’s a disaster, it’s bad. We call it red. If they’re open but have a limited menu, that’s yellow. Fully functioning restaurants mean the index has gone green!”. Given that they have re-opened to meet Governor Kemp’s guidelines, we would argue a lite green, but green never the less!

If you are a Food Service owner operator and have been shut down for an extended period of time, Pentair Everpure has the following guidance for your water treatment system;

Miami Beach Restaurant Re-Opening Plan!

Last Friday, April 24th, Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales sent a memorandum to members of the city’s Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee that outlines what he described as a “Resilient Recovery Plan” for the city, including restaurants.

Restaurant reopenings would proceed in two phases, according to the memo and additional information supplied by the Manager;

Phase one would allow restaurants to open with outdoor seating only at first, and would request that restaurants consider special hours to accommodate vulnerable populations. In addition, restaurants would operate at 50 percent capacity or require a minimum of six feet of space between tables. Employees would be required to work staggered shifts and wear masks, and hours would be reduced and menus limited. Restaurants would be required to implement measures to prevent servers and bussers to cross-contaminate tables. Establishments with liquor licenses could offer table service, but bars would remain closed to patrons.

Under phase two, restaurants would be allowed to relax social-distancing measures and increase capacity.

Until further notice, restaurants would be asked to supply straws for all drinks, reduce outside seating by 20 to 30 percent, increase airflow from the outside, use phone-app technology to take orders and receive payment, and operate on a reservations-only basis in order to stay within capacity limits.

Bars would not be allowed to open until phase two, when they would be allowed to operate with reduced standing-room occupancy and staggered work shifts and masks for employees. Pool tables and other touch devices (jukeboxes, games, and vending machines) would be off-limits. Plexiglas partitions would be required (the plan doesn’t specify where), as would increased airflow from outside and phone-app technology as with restaurants.
