The Flint, Michigan Water Crisis! What water filters really take out lead!

If you had to take a guess of where the above water came from where would you choose?  A place far away from here?  Would you be surprised if I told you this water came from here in the USA?  The above water is from Flint, Michigan.  This is a story that has made headlines across the country and has even started trending in social media with #flintwatercrisis and #flintcontaminatedwater.  Celebrities and others have generously donated money and bottled water to help those in need.  This water crisis has officially been declared a state of emergency. We won’t get into the history of what happened in detail but to summarize here is what is going on in Flint, Michigan.

  • In 2014 the city switches its main water supply from Detroit’s system to the Flint River in order to save money.
  • People living in the area begin to complain about the taste, odor and color of the water.  Others begin to report rashes and show concerns about bacteria
  • In January 2015 Detroit offers to reconnect the water waiving the $4 million connection fee.
  • The city declines the offer
  • In February 2015 a water test is shown that water from one person’s home has 104 parts per billion of lead.
  • More tests are shown to have high levels of lead.
  • Doctors begin to report that children are being treated for lead poisoning.
  • Residents have been advised to NOT drink from the tap water.
  • Flint, Michigan officially declares a State of Emergency.

Dealing with contaminated water is something Filter Pure Systems and Pentair/Everpure have always been prepared for.  Our products are designed to make water drinkable and safe to use for your kitchen equipment.  On January 19th, 2016 the WQA , Water Quality Association Addressed the Drinking Water Crisis in Flint, Michigan offering facts and tips about treating for lead contamination and noted that ;

“Lead (Pb) has been identified as the waterborne contaminant of primary concern for Flint’s residents. To minimize the presence of contaminants such as lead, which may enter the water after it has left a municipal treatment facility, WQA recommends water treatment equipment that has been certified by an ANSI (American National Standards Institute)-accredited certification body. Such accredited entities include WQA’s Gold Seal Product Certification Program. Filter Pure Systems offers and recommends the following Everpure filters and systems that meet these criteria in the removal of lead and are perfect for your under the kitchen sink (POU) point of use application;

The original POU, (Point of Use) Everpure OW Family for lead reduction;

The OW200L (P/N EV9619-01) has a rated capacity of 480 gallons. Its overall dimensions are 17″H x 3.25″ diameter. Its service flow rate is at maximum 0.5 gpm. Rated NSF 53 for Lead reduction. The OW2-PLUS (P/N EV9634-01) and the OW4-PLUS (P/N EV9635-01) are essentially the same as the OW200L. The only difference is their capacity rating and size. The OW2-PLUS is rated at 1,000 gallons and 10.25″H x 3.25″ Diameter. The OW4-PLUS is rated at 2,000 gallons and 14.5″H x 3.25″ diameter. But unlike the OW200L, they both contain a KDF media that can remove lead to below the Federal Action Level of 10 ppb. All the OW replacement water filter cartridges are NSF Certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53,

The New 2016 POU, (Point of Use) Line of High Capacity Lead Reduction Water Filter Cartridges, the Everpure FC-L;

Pentair is pleased to announce the launch of a new family of Everpure-branded high capacity lead reduction cartridges. The FC-L product line is available in 4- and 7-cartridge sizes, with and without scale inhibitor. The FC-L line offers 0.5 micron filtration, a 1.8 gpm flow rate per 4-size cartridge, a 2.7 gpm flow rate per 7-size cartridge, and proprietary Fibredyne™ II technology for superior chlorine reduction and dirt-holding capabilities plus lead reduction. Filter Pure Systems, Inc. to support the 2016 IPPExpo,come see us in booth A3224 !

Come see us in booth # A3224 as exhibitors at this year’s International Production & Processing Expo, January 26-28, 2016 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia to learn more about protecting your livestock and equipment! Water is a critical nutrient for livestock and poultry. As with feed ingredients, livestock water should meet the nutritional needs of the animal. An adequate and safe water supply is essential to the production of healthy livestock and poultry. Substances that originate on livestock farms and often contaminate water supplies include nitrates, bacteria, organic materials, and suspended solids. A high level of suspended solids and an objectionable taste, odor or color in water can cause animals to drink less than they should. Filtered water also protects equipment.  For instance with poultry, it means that the drinker nipples do not clog or drip so the birds get water but the litter under the drinkers remains dry. This means, of course, that flocks grow rapidly due to increased hydration and fewer pathogens in the litter. Filtered water means less frequent clogs and better operation of evaporative cooling systems and therefore a healthier environment for the flock. Starting with your specific water test and problem, Filter Pure can work with you to craft a water treatment solution that will insure the quality of water that you want delivered to your livestock. As a Pentair Industrial Distributor we offer a full line of Pentair Industrial and Pentek water filter and treatment solutions including filtration, softening and reverse osmosis.
At FilterPure Systems, Inc., our experts will work with you to manage your supply of filtration products to ensure that your animals have clean and healthy water.

Espresso Water Trick or Treat?

Ever had a bad espresso experience? Espresso is 85-96% water and that water is extremely important to delivering not only a great shot of espresso but not damaging a very expensive espresso machine. If the operator gets the water wrong this season you may find a ghostly taste in your coffee beverage. Chlorine can alter the aroma and increases acidity. It also bonds with organics creating an earthy or moldy overtone to the flavor. TDS, (total dissolved solids), can cause poor extraction of the grounds, under extraction leads to weak and sour drinks and over extraction leads to bitterness so taking care to treat coffee and espresso beverage water is extremely important.  From Starbucks to Dunkin the 2015 seasonal holiday specialty beverage season ramps up this week with Halloween and with it some of the most popular coffee beverages ever inspired by a season. Who hasn’t had a Pumpkin Spiced Latte?  This year’s current seasonal line up for Starbucks now includes the Toasted Graham Latte, the Salted Caramel Mocha and the Iced Vanilla Spiced Latte. Dunkin Doughnuts has their own Pumpkin Latte and Peet’s their Mayan Mocha! These hot seasonal espresso beverages have proven to increase sales and have succeeded for all of these chains and a lot of independent operators too by drawing in customers early and often during the holiday season. People don’t want to miss out on limited time seasonal offers and for a lot of us these drinks are now part of our memories of enjoying and celebrating the holiday season. Regardless of which one is your favorite, operators know and work diligently to make sure that all of these beverages begin with a great shot of espresso.  Everpure continues to lead the Industry in taking care of the ghosts in the water, by working directly with Specialty Coffee Operators and Espresso Equipment Manufactures. From the ESO and Claris cartridge systems delivering filtered softened water through salt less ion exchange to the blended reverse osmosis line of MRS, Mineral Reduction Systems, we have a solution to turn  the water operators are dealing with into the engineered water they need to deliver the espresso beverage that meets their specifications. For espresso, that means a softer water that also protects the equipment from both hard water scale and chloride, For example the, La Marzocco GB/5 Commercial Espresso Machine manual notes; For an operator the place to begin is with a POE, point of entry standard Everpure water test, DEV7013-73. This test includes the water bottle and lab analysis of 30 contaminants and characteristics. The test usually takes from 7 to 10 days to analyze at the laboratory located in Chicago and the following is a sample of the delivered analysis; https://dev-filterpure.pantheonsite.io/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Untitled3.jpgThis water would be way out of specification for the Marzocco with hardness of 257 ppm and chlorides of over 308.8ppm the recommendation would be an Everpure MRS Blended reverse osmosis system to actually take the mineral and chloride out of the water and deliver water with the correct specification of both hardness between 90ppm and 150ppm and chlorides of less than 50ppm. The size of the MRS unit is determined according to the amount of beverage water that will be needed at peak operating time within the facility. For example the MRS600HEII will make 600 gallons of water every 24 hours or 25 gph, (gallons per hour). The MRS350Bl will make 350 gallons every 24 hours or 14.58 gph, (gallons per hour). Not to worry though just call us and we will take care of sizing the equipment you need for your equipment. Everpure Espresso Solutions; The ESO7, EV9607-25 (ESO stands for Espresso, the 7 just means the size of the filter cartridge) is a three-in-one system providing filtration, scale prevention and buffering/softening of  the water. The water retains enough mineral to bring out the espresso flavors. The ESO7 will take care of up to 5,300 grains of hardness or at 8 grains of hardness will generate 511 gallons of espresso before it will need to be changed. The Claris XXL, EV4339-14, unit will give you the same great 3 in 1 filter but also give you the ability to generate 2,910 gallons of espresso, ( at 10 grains of hardness) but also has an adjustable DUOBLEND™ bypass valve that allows for a more precise adjustment of carbonate hardness. Either system is quick to install, easy to handle and fast to service. Everpure has developed an entire series of Blended MRS, Mineral Reduction System Reverse Osmosis units. From the MRS20, (20 stands for 20 gallons made per day), EV9797-, up to the MRS600HEII, (600 gallons made per day), EV9970-54. One of the most popular for the coffee and espresso application is the EV99-17. Note that all of these solutions require a storage tank. These systems can be sized to fit one piece of equipment or all of the coffee, espresso, beverage, etc..equipment that you are using to insure that the water you are using will protect your equipment from whatever changes occur within your water supply and provide the perfect water and ice for your beverages. Not sure of what you need to do to take care of the ghosts in your water? Give us a call at 800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com.

Deliming Instructions for Kleensteam SRX Scale Inhibitor Feeder.

     In addition to reducing harmful chlorine and controlling limescale build-up, the KleenSteam system may be used to conveniently introduce deliming material into the steamer without disturbing existing piping. Use only Everpure ScaleKleen deliming material. ScaleKleen is a highly effective, safe and environmentally friendly de-scaling product. Its routine maintenance usage removes built-up scale in steam equipment easily and quickly. This enhances steamer performance, reduces operating costs and helps prevent costly repairs and unexpected downtime. Other deliming products may contain harsh acids that can damage the housing materials or clog orifices. Generally, use one 2.2 lb (1 kg) package to delime most countertop units and two 2.2 lb packages to delime most boiler-based units. Deliming Instructions: 1)      Turn off the power switch on the steamer. 2)      Blow down steamer. Blow down is done automatically on some steamers when power is turned off. Manually blow down the steamer if it is not automatic. 3)      Turn off inlet water to Kleensteam system. 4)      Depress the red relief button located on top of the SR-X head to relieve system pressure. 5)      Unscrew the clear bowl and remove the cartridge. Dispose of the exhausted cartridge in normal trash and empty bowl of any remaining water. 6)      Remove the dip tube from its holding clip, located on the back plate. Insert the tube. O-ring first, into the center port of the SR-X head until the dip tube bottoms out. 7)      Open one kilogram (2.2 lb) package of ScaleKleen™ and empty it into the clear bowl. Wipe off any excess ScaleKleen™ material which may be on the bowl threads or O-ring. 8)      Thread the bowl back into the head- hand tight only. NOTE: The dip tube may become packed with ScaleKleen- This is normal and will not affect the deliming procedure. 9)      Turn on the inlet water to the KleenSteam unit by rotating the inlet valve handle. 10)  Turn on the power to the steamer. NOTE: This action will quickly introduce the ScaleKleen™ material directly into the boiler chamber. If you are deliming a countertop steamer, proceed to step 11. If you are deliming a boiler-base unit, monitor ScaleKleen™ level in bowl. When it drops to 1″, quickly turn off inlet water at valve handle. Now relieve pressure and unscrew bowl from head. Add another kilogram of ScaleKleen™ to the bowl and reintroduce the material into the boiler. Repeat this procedure until two (2) 2.2 lb packages of ScaleKleen™ have been introduced into the boiler chamber. 11)  With ScaleKleen™ material introduced into the boiler chamber and the inlet water turned on, make sure the boiler sump is flooded. Allow the steamer (countertop or boiler-based) to come up to operating temperature and pressure, and hold for one hour. 12)  Thirty minutes into the deliming procedure, turn on steam to cooking chamber(s) for one minute. This will delime the distribution lines, small orifices, and steam solenoid valves. 13)  After one hour of deliming the steamer at operating temperature and pressure, turn the steamer power switch to the off position. 14)  Manually blow down the steamer if it is not done automatically when the power is turned off. NOTE: Check the pH of the blow down water. If the pH is acidic (below 7.0), then the boiler has been completely descaled. If the pH is alkaline (above 7.0), then there is still scale remaining in the boiler. Repeat steps 7 through 14 until the pH from the boiler blow down water is below 7.0. 15)  Fill the boiler with fresh, clean water and repeat blow down until the water in the boiler is equal to the raw (incoming) water pH. This will remove any unused ScaleKleen and undissolved loose scale remaining in the boiler. NOTE: Depending on the steam generator fill probe configuration on your steamer, de-scaling compounds may leave residual foam bridging probe electrodes. This can cause a false water level indication leading to “dry firing” of the boiler that can burn out heating elements. To help ensure against incorrect probe operation, follow all of the instructions provided for de-scaling. This includes adding an additional 1 to 1 and 1⁄2 gallons of water to the de-scaling port(s) once automatic filling has stopped after the de-scaler drain cycle. This raises the water level above the fill probes, permitting them to be flushed clean and drained with the following drain cycle. 16)  After the second blow down, turn the steamer power switch to the off position, and turn off the inlet water at the valve handle on the KleenSteam unit. 17)  Relieve system pressure by depressing the red relief button on the head until all air is expelled and water begins to escape. 18)  Unscrew the clear bowl and remove the dip tube from the head. BE SURE TO REPLACE THE DIP TUBE IN IT’S HOLDER ON THE BACKPLATE!. 19)  Install a new SS-10 cartridge into the head, and screw the bowl back into the head. Hand tighten only! 20)  Turn on the inlet water. Relieve trapped air in the clear bowl by depressing the red relief button on the SR-X head until all air is expelled and water starts to escape. 21)  Turn the steamer power switch to the on position. Steamer is now ready to be placed back into service. Replacement Parts

Can water filters help prevent breast cancer?

Could something as simple as putting an activated carbon based water filter on your kitchen sink prevent or lower the risk of breast cancer for you and your family? Thousands of American municipalities add chlorine to their drinking water to get rid of microbes and kill bacteria in our drinking water.  But this inexpensive and highly effective disinfectant also interacts with organic compounds to create trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). THMs and HAAs are formed by reactions between chlorine and organic material such as humic acids and fulvic acids (both generated from the decay of organic matter) to create halogenated organics. —which when ingested encourage the growth of free radicals that can destroy or damage vital cells in the body. Recent studies have shown that chlorine and its by-products increase the risk of developing malignant melanoma, bowel, breast and bladder cancer. Researchers have found links between common chlorine disinfectant and breast cancer, which affects one out of every eight American women. A recent study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut found that women with breast cancer have 50-60 percent higher levels of organochlorines (chlorine by-products) in their breast tissue than cancer-free women. The fact of the matter is that if you live anywhere where the water is being treated with Chlorine you can inexpensively remove the risk of your exposure to it by installing a carbon-based filter containing activated carbon, which absorbs chlorine and other contaminants. Activated carbon surface properties are both hydrophobic and oleophilic; that is, they “hate” water but “love” oil. When flow conditions are suitable, dissolved chemicals in water flowing over the carbon surface “stick” to the carbon in a thin film while the water passes on. This process is called adsorption. As a result of the adsorption process, activated carbon is an effective method in removing chlorine and it’s by-products (TTHM’s) and volatile organic compounds (carbon based VOC’s), both, man-made and naturally occurring. Activated carbon is a natural material derived from bituminous coal, lignite, wood, coconut shell etc., activated by steam and other means and each one have different adsorption properties (e.g. bituminous carbon for high chlorine reduction capacity). Some manufacturers use various blends of carbon to achieve specific water quality and contaminants reduction (e.g. coconut shell carbon for “sweet taste”).

Everpure has an entire line of filters containing Micro-Pure® carbon designed to remove chlorine and chlorine by products including THMs generating premium quality drinking water for your home and office. Filter Pure recommends the Everpure OW, (Office Water) Family of water filters. Their unique filter blend uses activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor and offensive contaminants down to ½ micron in size even taking out water borne cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. All the OW replacement water filter cartridges are NSF Certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53, the OW200L (P/N EV9619-01) , OW2-PLUS (P/N EV9634-01) , and OW4-PLUS (P/N EV9635-01). We also carry the 4C cartridge (EV9600-00) and new line of Everpure (Fibredyne II)  FC-L cartridges. How do I find the part number that I need?

Many replacement cartridges and parts are listed with our products here in our website. If the part number you need is for a replacement cartridge, it is located on the cartridge’s label. The part number is usually an 8 or 9 letter/digit combination and begins with “EV” or “DEV”. If you need additional assistance, you can either e-mail us at orders@filterpure.com or call us at 1-800-942-7873.

How often should I change my cartridges?

In order for our filters to perform as represented and to provide the best quality water possible, it is essential that filters be replaced periodically. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water.

  • Prefilter
    The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.
  • Submicron Cartridges
    The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.
  • ScalestickTM
    The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

How do I remove the “used” cartridges and install new ones?

  1. Shut off the power to any equipment, if applicable.
  2. Shut off the filter system by turning off the water supply. Open the flushing valve to relieve the pressure.
  3. Hold the head firmly and turn the cartridge to the left ¼ turn until the rotation stops.
  4. Pull the cartridge down and out of the head. Some water may drain out of the system. Throw away the used cartridges.
  5. Hold the head firmly then align the new cartridge’s lug with the label on the head and insert the new cartridge into the head.
  6. Turn the cartridge to the right ¼ turn until the rotation stops.
  7. Turn on the water supply.
  8. Now, flush the cartridges by running water through the filter system to the drain for several minutes. Refer to the cartridge’s label for specific flushing times. Note: Be sure to shut off the flushing valve when finished.
  9. Turn on the power to the equipment, if applicable.

Download more information on changing cartridges.

Why do cartridges plug up?

Our cartridges are designed to remove contaminants and particles from the water. The cartridges will eventually plug as this material is removed, therefore, plugging indicates that the cartridges are working efficiently. If a cartridge plugs soon after installation, there are various things such as construction in your area or changes in reservoir levels that may alter the quality of your incoming water from day to day. This may produce low water pressure or excessive turbidity (large number of particles) in your water, which may cause the cartridges to plug prematurely.

Why do cartridges need to be flushed?

All carbon-based filters need to be flushed to remove any excess carbon fines that are inside the cartridges. New cartridges are filled with air; therefore, flushing also removes the air from inside the cartridges and replaces it with water. The flush time is written on each cartridge’s label. This process will allow any carbon-based cartridge to function at optimum levels without affecting any equipment that may be attached. Note: Be sure to shut off the flushing valve when finished.

Can filtered water increase the life of my equipment?

Many water supplies contain small particles as well as chemicals such as chlorine. The small particles can interfere with the mechanical operation of your equipment causing premature valve failure or plugging of nozzles. Chemicals such as chlorine can be corrosive and attack the internal metal surfaces. With Everpure water filter systems, particles as small as 0.5 micron as well as chlorine will be reduced and can extend the life of your equipment.

How can I prevent scale in my steamer?

Scale is caused when dissolved minerals, usually calcium and magnesium, are deposited as a white flaky solid on to the heating elements of your steamer. This material acts as an insulator, which increases energy usage. Over time this it can cause your equipment to fail altogether. Everpure offers several products designed to reduce or prevent scale formation. One product is the Everpure Kleensteam® system, which reduces scale build up. Another alternative is the Scalestick™. The Scalestick contains a special Hydroblend™ that inhibits mineral scale deposits in low flow water-fed equipment. Our MRS ( Mineral Reduction Systems), Line of reverse osmosis products also remove minerals that cause scale. To determine how much mineral is in your water, it’s best to have your water tested, call us for a water test at 800-942-7873.

HydroblendT and ScalestickT are trademarks of PWC Enterprises Inc. DBA Southeastern Filtration & Equipment Systems.

Are your products NSF Certified?

The majority of our cartridges are certified by NSF. This certification means that the contaminant reduction claims certified are true and accurate, the materials of construction do not add anything unwanted into the water, that the system is structurally sound, and that advertising claims are true and accurate. This certification provides assurance to the user that the system has been independently evaluated to confirm its performance. The certification is displayed on the cartridge’s label along with the claim; for example, chlorine reduction for 1000 gallons. Our certified products have been submitted for testing under NSF/ANSI Standards 53 and 42. For further information on NSF certification, please contact technical service at 1-800-942-1153 or information can be located on the NSF web-site, www.nsf.org

How is Everpure Treated water better than Tap water?

  • Municipalities have a primary objective of ensuring safe water. They can use a variety of technologies, but most all use some form of disinfection, either chlorine or chloramines. Unfortunately, chlorinated water has a distinctive off-taste and smell.
  • While municipal water treatment plants do meet EPA minimum requirements, they do not remove all contaminants nor do they filter for taste and odor.
  • Water always contains some dissolved mineral, and mineral is not removed by water treatment plants. This mineral causes hard scale in equipment that heats or freezes water, causing increased energy costs and reduced equipment life. Everpure offers products that reduce scale buildup.
  • As water travels from the treatment plant to your location, it can also pick up contaminants from old pipes.
  • Cysts are microbial living organisms (protozoans) that can be resistant to chlorine disinfection. Cysts have been known to cause health problems. Examples of cysts are Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
  • Not all water contaminants are bad, such as minerals, which Everpure filters do not remove. However, many contaminants such as chemicals, gasses and particles can affect the taste and smell. Some can even cause health problems.
  • Everpure removes chemicals like chlorine, along with dirt, rust particles, asbestos, small living organisms called cysts, and more, leaving you with crystal clear, clean and great-tasting water.

Why would I need a prefilter on my water treatment system?

Our quick-change filters remove contaminants as small as .5 micron. Microns are extremely tiny, in fact a human hair has the width of 40 microns. This means our filters are very effective at removing many contaminants. However, if your water is particularly dirty, we recommend placing a prefilter in front of your system. Prefilters are typically 10-25 micron, allowing them to remove the larger particles that might prematurely plug your system. Many of our systems provide a prefilter option.

How do I know if my water is treated with Chloramine?

Some municipalities have migrated from using chlorine to chloramine. Chloramine is chlorine combined with a small amount of ammonia. The addition of the ammonia allows the disinfectant to stay in the water longer, for greater distances. Chloramine is more difficult to remove from water that chlorine, and requires filters with much more carbon. There are two ways to determine if your water has chloramine: 1) contact your local water utility company, or 2) have your water tested. By testing your water for Total Chlorine and Free Chlorine, we can determine if your water is being treated with chloramines. Our CB20 line of products are effective at removing chlorine.

Doesn’t my water softener treat my water?

Water softeners use an ion exchange process. Typically sodium chloride is exchanged for hard minerals like calcium and magnesium, which makes water “soft”. Hard minerals cause a hard scale on equipment that heats or freezes water, and this scale is difficult to remove, often requiring frequent delimings. Softener systems are usually comprised of a resin tank, where the ion exchange process takes place, and a brine tank where the salt solution is created. A softener can exchange other contaminants depending on the resin used, for example it can help remove iron from water. However, a softener does not filter the water, so many contaminants such as dirt, cysts and particles can pass through a softener resin bed.

16th Annual World Barista Championship to feature Everpure filtration

The World Barista Championship is the premier event for international competition in the coffee community.  This competition serves as the championship from both local and regional qualifying events from World Coffee Events. Contestants prepare samples of Espressos, Cappuccinos, and original drinks in a 15-minute period. Judges will evaluate participant creations on not just taste but creativity, presentation, and skill. Each contestant’s creation will be different in almost every single way, except one key factor. The key ingredient that is the foundation for every great cup of coffee is the water. This year the entire event features water filtered by Pentair/Everpure. WBC Using the Everpure MRS 600 HE-II Water Filtration System for the entire event, the water not only tastes great, but also allows the contestants to craft beverages that meet their exacting standards. The MRS 600 HE-II is a high efficiency Reverse Osmosis system that provides blended water to meet the criteria determined by World Coffee Events. With a recovery rate of 78%, this unit has a significantly reduced impact on water use compared to other Reverse Osmosis offerings from competitors. For every cup of water produced only ¼ of a cup of wastewater is generated versus as much as 4 cups of water for other brands. Everpure Representatives will provide onsite training of the impact of water quality on coffee brewing at the event. ClarisUltra Claris Ultra systems will be awarded to the finalist of the show to allow them to bring home the quality of Everpure water in a convenient sized package. The Claris unit is a five stage softening and filtration system that allows the user to dial in the amount of mineral in specialty coffee applications. The minerals found in water can be a friend or foe for the Barista. Everpure Claris systems feature Duoblend technology that allows the Barista to dial in the appropriate amount of minerals for their drinks. The introduction this year of the Claris Ultra has also increased the capacity of Claris cartridges. All Claris systems use the same head, which allows interchangeability with the Claris and Claris Ultra cartridges. Whether you are looking to utilize the MRS 600HE-II for Reverse Osmosis system for tailored water specifications or using the Claris to dial in the mineral for your Coffee or Espresso Filter Pure Systems, Inc. can find a solution to meet your specialty coffee needs.  We utilize our knowledge and experience of water filtration treatment and solutions to not only protect your expensive coffee/espresso equipment investment but make sure that you are providing the quality cup of coffee and/or espresso that you want to deliver to your customer every day. Chloride Ate Your Combi!

Lately, we have seen a rise in customer’s having problems with their boiler free combi ovens. Whether it is an Alto Sham, Blodgett, Cleveland, Rational, or CONVOtherm, alot of money has been invested in that equipment and with that investment, a long life is expected.  That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the water warranty requirements.

Did you know that the warranty can be voided if there is chloride in the water that is feeding your equipment, especially if the damage is caused by the chloride. The consensus of manufactures’ spec sheets is that chloride, specified in the water feeding your combi oven, is supposed to be less than 25 ppm,( parts per million).

For the combi oven pictured above, the water test came back indicating that the chloride levels were at 308.8 ppm. That’s high!!

So why is chloride so bad in combi ovens, boiler based or boilerless? Keep in mind that chloride is not chlorine.

So what happens when you have alot of hydrogen chloride in your water and you super-heat it quickly into steam? It jumps out as hydrochloric acid, which is a clear, colorless, highly pungent solution of hydrogen chloride (HCL) in water. It is a highly corrosive strong mineral acid and it can chew through stainless steel very quickly. So where do you start if you already have a combi oven and you are seeing this type of damage? A detailed water test that will give you a full analysis of the chemical composition of your water is the place to start. Once you know that you do have an unacceptable level of chloride in your water, you can go to work on purchasing a blended reverse osmosis unit in order to remove the chloride. Why blended reverse osmosis? Because, no filter will take chlorides out of your water. Remember this is chloride, not chlorine. Reverse osmosis is not filtration, it is the use of a semi permeable membrane that forces everything but the water molecule out of the water. With blended RO you can then blend back in the right amount of filtered raw water in order to create the chemical composition of the water that you want to feed your combi. Everpure has developed an entire series of Blended MRS, Mineral Reduction System Reverse Osmosis units. From the MRS20, (20 stands for 20 gallons made per day), EV9797-91, up to the MRS600HEII, (600 gallons made per day), EV9970-54. One of the most popular for the combi application is the MRS350, (350 gallons of water made per day), EV9970-17. Note that these solutions require a storage tank. These systems can be sized to fit your piece or pieces of equipment and insure that the water you are using will protect your combi oven from whatever changes occur within your water supply.
