Legionnaires’ outbreak linked to North Carolina state fair kills fourth person:

https://www.foxnews.com/health/legionnaires-outbreak-north-carolina-state-fair-fourth-death

Another person has died as a result of a Legionnaires’ outbreak in North Carolina, state health officials announced late last week. The death of a fourth person due to the outbreak – possibly linked to a hot tub display at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair, which took place Sept. 6-15 at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher – was revealed in an updated interim report released Friday by officials with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Health officials also have confirmed 141 cases of Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever, a milder form of the illness. The outbreak has affected North Carolina residents as well as those in other states. Ninety-four people, or about 69 percent, have been hospitalized due to the outbreak!

An estimated 8,000 to 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease each year in the U.S. How can so many people be infected by this bacteria, especially in places where you think you would be safe from any deadly bacteria? Being exposed to any water system can be a source of disease if the water in it is subjected to conditions that promote growth of the organism as in the case of the Spas noted above at the fair.

So how do you kill Legionella?

First, is preventing it! Killing the bacteria before it reaches any water system. Traditional oxidizing agents such as chlorine have been proven very effective in controlling Legionella. Using continuous chlorination at low free residual levels can be effective in controlling Legionella. That’s why many hospitals are using Everpure’s 7SI cartridges on their ice machines to help prevent the Legionella bacteria from forming in their water.

2019 Starbucks PSL Official Launch Date August 27th?

The 2019 holiday coffee season is almost here and august 27th my be the day again this year!  PSL’s, ( Pumpkin Spiced Latte) and all things pumpkin spice ushered in an early fall coffee season in 2018 when Starbuck’s began serving it on August 27th. Dunkin has already announced that their Pumpkin line up will return to the menu on August 21. Dunkin’s Pumpkin Flavored Coffee, K-Cup Pods, pumpkin doughnut, muffins and Munchkins donut holes are returning, along with the new Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Signature Latte, Apple Cider Donut and Munchkins. Pumpkin flavor swirl can be added to hot, iced coffee, Cold Brew, espresso drinks, frozen coffee and frozen chocolate. Every year America’s insatiable desire for all things pumpkin spice has the fall coffee season starting earlier.  Starbucks has been debuting the Pumpkin Spice Latte around Labor Day since 2003, selling over 200 million cups of the game-changing drink since. But the coffee chain has been known to rile up the PSL cult by offering opportunities for fans to get the drink early, usually the last week of August. In the last few years, however, pumpkin spice demand has reached a fever pitch. Data from Nielsen shows that total sales of pumpkin-flavored foods in the U.S. grew almost 80 percent between 2011 and 2015, to over $360 million in 2015. These hot seasonal espresso beverages have proven to increase sales and have succeeded for all of these chains and a lot of independent operators too by drawing in customers early and often during the holiday season. People don’t want to miss out on limited time seasonal offers and for a lot of us these drinks are now part of our memories of enjoying and celebrating the holiday season and they all have one major ingredient in common, water!  Espresso is 85-96% water and that water is extremely important to delivering not only a great shot of espresso but not damaging a very expensive espresso machine. Chlorine can alter the aroma and increases acidity. It also bonds with organics creating an earthy or moldy overtone to the flavor. TDS, (total dissolved solids), can cause poor extraction of the grounds, under extraction leads to weak and sour drinks and over extraction leads to bitterness so taking care to treat coffee and espresso beverage water is extremely important.  Regardless of which one is your favorite, operators know and work diligently to make sure that all of these beverages begin with a great shot of espresso.  Everpure continues to lead the Industry in taking care of coffee and espresso water quality by working directly with Specialty Coffee Operators and Espresso Equipment Manufactures.

Everpure Claris Ultra 2019

From the ESO and Claris cartridge systems delivering filtered softened water through salt less ion exchange to the blended reverse osmosis line of MRS, Mineral Reduction Systems, we have a solution to turn  the water operators are dealing with into the engineered water they need to deliver the espresso beverage that meets their specifications. For espresso, that means a softer water that also protects the equipment from both hard water scale and corrosion from chloride. For a superior quality extraction of coffee solids the Statistics & Standards Committee of the Specialty Coffee Association of America has determined the following standards for the water used to brew specialty coffee.

Characteristic Target Acceptable Range;
Odor 1 Clean / Fresh, Odor free
Color 2 Clear color
Total Chlorine O mg/L
TDS 3 150 mg/L 75 – 250 mg/L
Calcium Hardness 4 grains or 68 mg/L 1 – 5 grains or 17 mg/L – 85 mg/L
Total Alkalinity 40 mg/L At or near 40 mg/L
pH 7.0 6.5 to 7.5
Sodium 10 mg/L At or near 10 mg/L
1 Odor is based on sensory olfactory determination
2 Color is based on sensory visual determination
3 TDS measured based on a 4-4-2 conversion
The Target is the most desirable point in the Acceptable Range, although falling within the range is considered meeting the standard. These variances are in place to take into consideration real world circumstances, and the target gives the optimum measurement of each characteristic to strive for. For an operator then, the place to begin is with a POE, point of entry standard Everpure water test, DEV7013-73. This test includes the water bottle and lab analysis of 30 contaminants and characteristics. The test usually takes from 7 to 10 days to analyze at the laboratory located in Chicago.  In order to provide both a superior quality shot of espresso and protect the equipment from scaling and/or corrosion the water being used to feed the espresso machine needs to be within the manufacturers published range. La Marzocco publishes the following water quality specification for the warranty of there espresso machines;

For example if your water analysis at your location indicates hardness of 257 ppm and chlorides of over 308.8 ppm youw ould be way out of range to meet the warranty for La Marzocco.   So the recommendation would be an Everpure MRS Blended reverse osmosis system to actually take the mineral and chloride out of the water and deliver water with the correct specification of both TDS, total disolved solids between 90ppm and 150ppm and chlorides of less than 3o ppm in order to protect the machine from corrosion.  The size of the MRS unit is determined according to the amount of beverage water that will be needed at peak operating time within the facility. For example the MRS600HEII will make 600 gallons of water every 24 hours or 25 gph, (gallons per hour). The MRS350Bl will make 350 gallons every 24 hours or 14.58 gph, (gallons per hour). Not to worry though just call us and we will take care of sizing the equipment you need for your equipment.
Everpure Espresso Solutions also include;
The ESO7, EV9607-25 (ESO stands for Espresso, the 7 just means the size of the filter cartridge) is a three-in-one system providing filtration, scale prevention and buffering/softening of  the water. The water retains enough mineral to bring out the espresso flavors. The ESO7 will take care of up to 5,300 grains of hardness or at 8 grains of hardness will generate 511 gallons of espresso before it will need to be changed.
The Claris XXL, EV4339-14, unit will give you the same great 3 in 1 filter but also give you the ability to generate 2,910 gallons of espresso, ( at 10 grains of hardness) but also has an adjustable DUOBLEND™ bypass valve that allows for a more precise adjustment of carbonate hardness. Either system is quick to install, easy to handle and fast to service.
The Claris Prime EV4339-86  Features a 6-stage filtration process, protects equipment from scale and mineral-induced corrosion in areas with high TDS, chloride (Cl-) and sulphate (SO4) content in the feed water.
Everpure has developed an entire series of Blended MRS, Mineral Reduction System Reverse Osmosis units. From the MRS20, (20 stands for 20 gallons made per day), EV9797-, up to the MRS600HEII, (600 gallons made per day), EV9970-54. One of the most popular for the coffee and espresso application is the EV99-17. Note that all of these solutions require a storage tank.
These systems can be sized to fit one piece of equipment or all of the coffee, espresso, beverage, etc..equipment that you are using to insure that the water you are using will protect your equipment from whatever changes occur within your water supply and provide the perfect water and ice for your beverages. 11 former guests of an Atlanta hotel now have Legionnaires’ disease. Authorities have identified 55 more probable cases.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/30/health/legionnaires-disease-atlanta-hotel-probable-cases/index.html

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that is caused from inhaling mist that is infected with the bacteria Legionella. The mist could come from a variety of places, including hot tubs, showers, decorative fountains or air-conditioning units for large buildings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes online that “less commonly, people can get Legionnaires’ disease by aspiration of drinking water,” which can happen when water “’goes down the wrong pipe,’ into the trachea (windpipe) and lungs instead of the digestive tract.” Symptoms of the disease include fever, cough, chills, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle aches, confusion and diarrhea, according to the health department. An estimated 8,000 to 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease each year in the U.S. How can so many people be infected by this bacteria, especially in places where you think you would be safe from any deadly bacteria? Being exposed to any water system can be a source of disease if the water in it is subjected to conditions that promote growth of the organism.
That’s why many hospitals are using Everpure’s 7SI and 4 SI cartridges on their ice machines to help prevent the Legionella bacteria from forming in their water in compliance with ASHRAE 188. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), one of the reasons that ASHRAE Standard 188:
Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems is being developed to help prevent the high fatality rate for hospital patients that contract Legionella. This standard is designed to prevent the bacteria from entering and/ or reproducing in a hospital water system. The standard places responsibility for water safety on everyone associated with the design, construction, installation, ownership, operation, management, and maintenance of a building’s water system. The cold water dispensers of hospital ice machines have been proven to be a potential source of Legionella. Two studies, in 1985 and 1997, traced Legionella directly to the ice. ASHRAE Standard 188 requires that the HACCP plan include all potable water systems, including ice machines. If the potable water system, such as an ice machine, has “incoming potable water containing less than 0.5 mg/l residual halogen such as chlorine”, it is a risk factor for Legionella.  Stout JE, Yu VL, Muraca P (1985). Isolation of Legionella pneumophila from the cold water of hospital ice machines:  implications for origin and transmission of the organism. Infection Control, 6:141–146.  Pentair®/Everpure® have created cost-effective, application-specific filtration systems that will allow a hospital to keep its ice machines in compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188, and help provide critical protection from protozoan cysts and scale damage: the 4SI and 7SI Carbonless Water Filters from Pentair Everpure. These unique water filters provide a number of important benefits:
Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188, allows municipal chlorine and chloramine residual to pass through to the ice machine
Slime/Bio Film Reduction, chlorine can help to reduce the growth of slime and bacteria inside the ice machine
Cyst Reduction, submicron media reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia that can cause waterborne diseases in humans (reduction occurs by mechanical means*)
Scale Protection, scale inhibitor reduces scale deposits that can cause downtime, maintenance calls and increased service costs. Scale can also result in the clogging of distribution lines, freeze-up on evaporator plates, and cause pumps, solenoids and probes to malfunction or fail.
Particulate Reduction. Pentair’s proprietary Fibredyne™ media has superior dirt-holding capabilities versus conventional carbon block filters.
Retrofits Everpure Brand Filter Heads. Quickly and easily convert Everpure Insurice®, 4/7CB5-S and 7FC-S Systems to 4SI or 7SI systems simply by swapping out the filter cartridges.

Know the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion as record-breaking temps grip the U.S.!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dangerous-heat-wave-grips-us-symptoms-to-watch-out-for/

When your body can’t cool, your temperature rises and you can become ill. Hot weather and exercise are the main causes of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. In hot settings, you need to be mindful of the temperature outside. The heat index is not the same as the temperature. It measures the air temperature plus the effects of humidity. A heat index of 90°F or higher is dangerous. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures increases your risk of heat-related illnesses.
If a person is displaying known heat illness symptoms, take their temperature. A reading of 104°F or more means they probably have heatstroke. You should call 911 and get medical care right away. There are many things you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses. Babies, children, and elderly people are more sensitive to heat and require extra attention. You also are at greater risk if you are ill or obese, or have heart disease. People who work outside or in a hot setting also are at risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Don’t go outside when the temperature and heat index are high. If possible, stay indoors in air-conditioned areas. If you must go outside, take the following precautions.
Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella.
Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
Avoid or limit drinks that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee, and soda) or alcohol.
Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
Take frequent breaks from the heat and outdoor activities.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration and lack of salt contribute to heat-related illnesses. Some sports drinks can help replenish the salt in your body lost through sweating. Drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If your urine is clear, you are probably drinking enough fluids. Dark-colored urine is a sign that you’re dehydrated.
Looking to create your very own hydration station at home! You may want to consider an Industry top seller like the H-300 drinking water system. The sweltering temperatures of recent days were just a warm-up. The heat wave scorching two-thirds of the nation will hit its peak over the weekend so beware and stay hydrated!  Heat-related illnesses occur when your body can’t keep itself cool. This Sunday, is your water ready for Mom?

As the most popular holiday of the year to dine out, Mother’s Day will entice nearly half of Americans to dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery on this Sunday, May 12th. According to the NRF, National Retail Federation, this 2019 Mother’s Day will be the biggest one yet as consumers spend a record $25 billion, up from $23.1 billion in 2018. Whether consumers pick mom’s preferred buffet breakfast or her favorite fine-dining dinner, America’s restaurants are stepping up to the plate to help families celebrate the special occasion. And while a majority of consumers make their Mother’s Day meal plans less than a month out, nearly one in five have probably been planning their celebratory meals for more than one month and the first thing that Mom is going to taste is the water! With everything that’s been happening in the news lately regarding drinking water, make sure that your Restaurant’s table water is ready to make a great first impression also. You can be sure that if your water is off color with a bad taste or odor this weekend, it is going to reflect poorly on the person who recommended your restaurant for Mom.

Either way it is certainly something that is easy to avoid, as easy as making sure that your water filters have been changed or if you don’t already have one, installing an Everpure water filtration system to take care of all of the beverages and ice that you are serving.  If you already have an Everpure system, it is essential that filters be replaced periodically. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water.

Prefilter, ( First bowl to left, system above)

The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.

Submicron Cartridges ( 3 in the middle system pictured above)

The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.

Scalestick  ( cartridge in last bowl to right pictured in system above)

The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

You should also replace your water filters whenever you notice a decline in performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure, or an unusual taste in the water. You should also, per the CDC, replace your water filter after any boil water advisory alert is lifted in your area. Remember: taste and odor may tip you off to the presence of chlorine in your water, but most contaminants are tasteless and odorless.

For the benefit of our customers, we have set-up automatic electronic reminders that are sent when we see that their filters are due to be replaced, based on order history.  We can even set-up Auto-Ship for customers that know they will need water filters by a certain date, but may not remember to place an order.

If you have a question regarding how often you should replace your filter or not sure about the filter system that you have please email your questions and a picture of the system to info@filterpure.com or call our team at 1-800-942-7873 and have a very Happy Mother’s Day!

This Earth Day you can start saving the planet today, one less water bottle at a time!

Sip, save and recycle! It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. After decades-long streak of strong growth, bottled water surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the largest beverage category by volume in the United States in 2016, according to research and consulting firm Beverage Marketing Corp. Annual consumption of plastic bottles is set to top half a trillion by 2021, far outstripping recycling efforts and jeopardizing oceans, coastlines and other environments. A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change. Currently the average American uses more than167 disposable water bottles annually. Altogether, Americans’ use over 50 billion plastic water bottles a year. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great! Valentines Day Reminder! Will they love your water?

Valentine’s Day, the second biggest dining day of the year is coming up this Thursday, February 14th and according to the National Restaurant Association more than 70 million people will be dining out at their favorite restaurant this year. If you have a water filtration system in your restaurant you’ll want to make sure that the water filters have been changed and that the system is operating perfectly so that your water makes a wonderful first impression. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water. Also note the following if you have one of our Everpure High Flow Systems like the incredibly popular and top selling EV9437-10 pictured below;

More information on the EV9437-10 Quad High Flow System;

  • Prefilter
    The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.
  • Submicron Cartridges
    The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.
  • ScalestickTM
    The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

Happy Valentines Day and please call us directly with any specific questions at 800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com.
