What type of Everpure Water Filter System should I be using on my Hoshizaki DCM-270BAH?

Dispensing both water and ice from the same unit, the Hoshizaki DCM-270BAH air cooled countertop ice maker and water dispenser has become a very popular model especially within Hospitals in the Healthcare Industry. The unit can produce up to 282 lb. of easy to chew “cubelet” ice per day and holds 8.8 lb. of ice in its storage bin. An integrated CleanCycle feature performs a 15-minute purge every 12 hours in order to rid itself of impurities found within the water, making this unit safe for consumption no matter what time of day it is most frequented. A durable stainless steel exterior will allow for years of high volume use, while the self-contained design also reduces opportunities for cross contamination.

Hoshizaki DCM-270BAH Countertop Ice Maker and Water Dispenser - 8.8 lb. Storage Air Cooled

If you are using your Hoshizaki DCM-270BAH in a Healthcare environment you will certainly want to consider complying with  ASHRAE STANDARD 188. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), one of the reasons that ASHRAE Standard 188-2015 Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems has been developed is to help prevent the high fatality rate for hospital patients that contract Legionella. This standard is designed to prevent the bacteria from entering and/or reproducing in a hospital water system. The standard places responsibility for water safety on everyone associated with the design, construction, installation, ownership, operation, management, and maintenance of a building’s water system. The new standard recommends the formation of a“Designated Team” who is responsible for developing and implementing a Legionellosis Risk Management Plan (Annex Section A2). ASHRAE Standard 188 currently states “to control Legionella numbers in the distribution system, a disinfectant residual should be maintained.” This means allowing municipal disinfected water to pass into the ice machines. This residual chlorine can range from 1 mg/L to 4 mg/L, depending on the type of disinfectant used (chlorine or chloramines), the dosage (mg/L) and the distance the hospital is from the municipal treatment plant. Everpure currently offers a cost-effective, application-specific filtration system that will allow a hospital to keep its ice machines in compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188, and help provide critical protection from protozoan cysts and scale damage: the 4SI and 7SI Carbonless Water Filters from Pentair Everpure. These unique water filters provide a number of important benefits including;

  • Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188. Allowing  municipal chlorine and chloramine residual to pass through to the ice machine.
  •  Slime Reduction. Chlorine can help to reduce the growth of slime and bacteria inside the ice machine.
  •  Cyst Reduction. Submicron media reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia that can cause waterborne diseases in humans (reduction occurs by mechanical means*)
  • Scale Protection. Scale inhibitor reduces scale deposits that can cause downtime, maintenance calls and increased service costs. Scale can also result in the clogging of distribution lines, freeze-up on evaporator plates, and cause pumps, solenoids and probes to malfunction or fail.
  • Particulate Reduction. Pentair’s proprietary Fibredyne™ media has superior dirt-holding capabilities versus conventional carbon block filter.
  • Certified to NSF Standards 42 and 53.

For the  Hoshizaki DCM-270BAH, Everpure recommends the Everpure EV9324-61 Insurice Single PF 4SI System with a capacity of 15,000 gallons and a 2.00 gpm flow rate.

A reverse osmosis system is the the number one thing you can do to easily ward off Cancer!

Cancer experts have identified 20 chemicals that we may be exposed to daily that are suspected of causing cancer in our every day lives. When the President’s Cancer Panel released its report stating that environmental chemicals were a “grossly underestimated” cause of cancers in the U.S., the American Cancer Society (ACS) responded by saying the report put too much weight on environmental causes and not enough emphasis on known cancer risks, such as tobacco smoke and obesity. Hoping to bring a little clarity to the field of chemicals that may trigger cancers, the ACS, three government agencies, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer published a list of 20 chemicals so far not officially linked to cancer but still in widespread use that have the strongest evidence against them that they may cause cancer. After reviewing the existing research, 20 chemicals showed enough evidence of causing cancer in laboratory tests and in animals that there was a strong likelihood that they could also cause cancer in humans. Most of the chemicals on their list are industrial chemicals, for instance, carbon black (a substance used to make synthetic rubber) and welding fumes, but others are much more common and can crop up in everything from our sunscreen to our water supply:

  • Atrazine: a widely used pesticide for corn that’s so hazardous it’s banned in Switzerland, the home country of the company that manufactures it.
  • Chloroform: a water-disinfection by-product that can wind up in your tap water.
  • Diesel engine exhaust.
  • Diethylheyxl ptthalate (DEHP): a chemical used to keep vinyl plastics, like your shower curtain, soft and pliable
  • Formaldehyde: already a known human carcinogen that causes pharynx and nasal cancers, this chemical (used in hundreds of building products) was added to the list because of suspicions that it might cause leukemia.
  • Lead and lead compounds.
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): banned since the 1980s, these industrial flame retardants still linger in our food supply.
  • Styrene: used to make polystyrene foam coffee cups and takeout containers.
  • Perchloroethylene: the commonly used dry-cleaning solvent.
  • Titanium dioxide: used as a colorant in paints but also as an ingredient in sunscreens; the researchers were particularly concerned about nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, which are already suspected of causing brain damage.

Reverse osmosis drinking water systems are the number one recommendation for removing a wide variety of these contaminants including atrazine, chloroform, Lead, Fluoride and other industrial chemicals that the ACS included on its list, such as trichloroethylene (a solvent used in auto body shops and mechanics’ garages) and formaldehyde. Filter Pure Systems recommends and stocks several different brands of reverse osmosis systems including Hydrotech’s latest RO system featuring quick-change cartridges, which can be customized for changing water conditions. These proprietary cartridges also simplify the regular replacement as required – typically on an annual basis. The QCRO delivers bottle water quality without the hassle or cost.

Water Quality is crucial for Chewblet Ice, the Follett HCC1000AHT Ice machine.

Image result for Follett HCC1000AHt Ice machine

The Follett HCC1000AHT self-contained 1000,1400 series Chewblet® ice machine requires .5 gpm gallons per minute and will generate up to 1100 lbs of ice every 24 hours. Independent market research* shows that up to 80% of consumers prefer Chewblet ice in their fountain beverages and requent fountain users particularly like Chewblet ice. Independent lab testing compared Chewblet ice to several types of cube and nugget ice. The results? Chewblet ice was comparable or superior in every category!
• Drink displacement – better displacement than cubes and nuggets for higher profit
• Cold plate performance – outperforms cubes, doesn’t bridge like nuggets – colder more consistent drink temperatures
• Drink dilution and carbonation retention – comparable to cubes –longer lasting, high quality taste

Chewblet ice is formed on the interior wall of a barrel-shaped evaporator. A rotating auger gently removes the ice from the evaporator wall and extrudes it through a compression nozzle to remove unfrozen water. From the nozzle, ice is pushed into a transport tube and distributed to a bin or dispenser up to 20 feet (6 m) away for Maestro ice machines and 75 feet (23 m) for Horizon ice machines. The result is Chewblet ice, uniformly shaped pieces of chewable ice in two different sizes with highly reliable dispensing. Original Chewblet ice is approx. 1″ (25.4 mm) long and Micro Chewblet ice is approx. 3/8″(9.5 mm) long.  Where as smaller, softer nugget ice often causes bridging and jamming in ice and beverage dispensers, Chewblet ice dispenses reliably. Chewblet ice can be dispensed from Follett Vision™ ice and beverage dispensers, as well as from most models of countertop ice and beverage dispensers. Follett offers top kits to all but the key to any Chewblet ice starts with the water quality and water is food. That is why the Everpure Insurice Single PF-i20002 System (EV-9324-21)is recommended for the Follett HCC1000AHS Ice machine. The system features unique precoat technology and Micro-Pure II media to deliver premium quality ingredient water and protection from scale damage.

26485

  • Capacity: 9,000 gallons (34,065 liters); Flow Rate: 1.67 gpm (6.32 lpm)
  • Includes coarse prefilter to protect the i20002 cartridge from large particles, cartridges included.
  • NSF 42/53 for health affects. Removes cysts by mechanical means including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, volatile organic chemicals, (VOCs) and MTBE (Methyl, tertiary-butyl ether).
  • Removes particles that result in cloudy ice.
  • Removes off-tastes and odors.
  • Reduces scale build up and corrosion.
  • Reduces abrasion and clogging.
  • Delivers the best quality ice possible while protecting the ice machine translating into less equipment downtime, lower maintenance costs and lower total cost of ownership.

What about your water and water filtration system after Hurricane Irma?

Provided the water in your area does not fall under a “Do not use”, boil water alert, your filter system and filters unless damaged by the storm should be fine. If your area does fall under a boil water alert you should change all filters and membranes installing new, unused filters or membrane cartridges after you have completely sanitized your system. Boil water alerts are often issued by water municipalities when damage occurs to water lines.  These alerts can also be issued if there is a loss in water pressure, allowing bacteria to backwash into the water pipes. Minerals and viruses like E.coli, cryptosporidium, and giardia, are all things that may get into water when a pipe breaks or during a natural disaster, like flooding. Below is Everpure’s Technical Service Bulletin regarding water quality emergencies and the procedures to place your system back into operation after a boil water alert.

Everpure Technical Service Bulletin
File No: 011414
Subject: Responding to Water Quality Emergencies

RESPONDING TO WATER QUALITY EMERGENCIES
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes cause contamination of municipal water systems over a large area. Industrial and other chemical leaks can also cause contamination of water supplies. If a water quality emergency occurs in your location, follow your local municipality’s instructions for addressing the emergency. If a boil order is issued, follow that boil order advisory until you have been notified by local authorities that your water is potable and safe to use.
Following is our recommended procedure for cleaning and start-up of Pentair water treatment systems using Pentair filters and RO membranes for commercial foodservice applications.

PENTAIR® OBEYING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES:
Obey them, period!
Contamination due to breaks in the mains, general flooding, or damage to the municipal waterworks itself should not be confused with situations in which contamination by protozoan cysts (e.g. Cryptosporidium, Giardia) is discovered in a water supply. Everpure submicron filters and RO membranes are NSF-Certified for removing such cysts, but not for killing or removing dangerous bacteria and viruses, which must be assumed to be present during the aftermath of a disaster, chemical spill or other water emergency.
When a Boil Water Advisory is announced and it is clear that there has been gross contamination, operators should stop using their filtration or RO system and boil their water as advised by their local authorities, until:
1. The “all clear” is given by local water authorities
2. Plumbing systems in your facility have been disinfected
3. Your Pentair system has been cleaned and any old or contaminated filter or RO cartridges have been replaced with new ones

CLEANUP OF PENTAIR SYSTEMS:
When safe water is available again, all water-using equipment should be sanitized with an approved disinfectant such as diluted chlorine bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite). The recommended dosage is 100-200 mg/L chlorine, which is easy to make. Fresh bleach has about 50 mg of chlorine in each mL, or about 500 mg in a capful. Four capfuls or an ounce in a 2-1/2 gal. bucket of water makes about 200 mg/L. Add a few drops of cleaning concentrate (e.g. dish detergent) to this solution and use it to clean external surfaces. Unexposed, interior plumbing surfaces can be sanitized in place using a Pentair Everpure JT Sanitizing/Flushing Cartridge. (Contact your local distributor or sales agent to acquire the JT can). This is an empty housing which can be filled with any cleaning or sanitizing solution and then be inserted into Everpure-branded filter heads. When the flow of water resumes, the disinfectant will be fed into the lines. When a strong chlorine smell is evident at the closest outlet, the flow should be stopped and the sanitizing solution left to soak for at least 30 minutes. When sanitization is complete, remove the flushing cartridge and install new, unused filters or membrane cartridges. Rinse the equipment by flushing water through the system as directed in your system’s Installation and Operation manual. Return your filtration or RO system to service.

POST-EMERGENCY SYSTEM OPERATION:
Follow the replacement cartridge change-out schedule per your system’s specifications. We suggest that you continue to monitor and follow your local water authority’s post-emergency recommendations. Please note that water problems caused by natural disasters often include high turbidity, even muddy, conditions. As a result, filter cartridges may clog faster and need replacing sooner than usual.

If you have any questions regarding these instructions or require additional assistance please call us at 1-800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com
