Safe Drinking Water Act

The Safe Drinking Water Act was passed by Congress in 1974. This was to protect public drinking water by regulating its supply. It was however amended in 1986 and 1996. It authorizes the US EPA to set National Health Based Standards for drinking water. The sources of water include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs and ground water wells. It does not include private wells. The contaminants they are protecting against are both naturally occurring and man-made that are found in drinking water. The 1974 version of the Act was focused on the treatment of the water to be safe at the tap. In 1996 the amendment enhanced the law by looking at the source water protection, operation training, funding for system improvements, and providing the public with more information. The list of regulated contaminants is very long; however they have broken it down into primary and secondary contaminants. The main concern is monitoring contaminants that may have adverse health risks. Examples of these are arsenic, lead, mercury, and uranium to name a few. The secondary contaminates are the aesthetics of water, like taste, odor, and clarity. Some of the contaminates that cause this are aluminum, copper, iron, fluoride and sulfate.  A series of filters we recommend to handle the second contaminates is the Pentek EP series carbon-briquette cartridges. • Nominal 5-micron rating* • High dirt-holding capacity maximizes utilization of the carbon block* • Highly effective bad taste & odor and chlorine taste & odor reduction* The government is working hard on regulating the water standards from state to state and even county to county. However the water may not be as clean as you need it to be for safe drinking water. Filter Pure is here to help make that happen. For more information on the removal of the above contaminates and how Filter Pure has been assisting the Government, Schools, and Municipalities please contact Amy Easter, amy@filterpure.com or 800-942-7873.
