McDonald's Battles to be Breakfast Champs

McDonald’s really wants you to drink its coffee! The fast-food giant is battling against Starbucks, Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts to capture a greater share of the breakfast market.  But can the burger chain reinvent the wheel when it comes to coffee? And can the public embrace coffee from a place that serves McNuggets?

As the breakfast wars wage on, McDonald’s has introduced a slew of new coffee products- from specialty spiced beverages and bagged beans. But with many of their flavored beverages coming in over 400 calories, the coffee offerings are about as healthy as a Big Mac.

Here are five ways McDonald’s is ramping up their coffee game:

  • 1. Free coffee, again.

In April of this year, McDonald’s offered free cups of coffee during breakfast hours for two weeks. Now that it’s fall, the chain is renewing their complimentary coffee offer, which is from Sept. 16-29.

  • 2. McCafe to hit grocery store shelves.

Like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s has decided to expand its coffee offerings to the home brewer. Next year, fans of McCafe will be able to buy the burger chain’s signature roasts in grocery stores. According to the LA Times, McDonald’s will offering several roasts including breakfast blend, decaf, and French in 12-ounce bags and ready-to-brew pods.
  • 3. Jumping on the Pumpkin Spice bandwagon.

Pumpkin spice flavor is everywhere. But McDonald’s only began offering the fall favorite to it’s menu last year. But apparently, it won’t be available at every location so Starbucks will likely stay on top of the #PSL battle.

  • 4. Expanding pastry offerings.

What makes good coffee even better? How about something sweet on the side. Last year, Starbucks acquired La Boulange bakery in an effort to boost premium snacks and pastries. This year, McDonald’s began testing mini bundt cakes in select Florida markets. The little cakes come in three varieties: classic cinnamon coffee cake, lemon and double chocolate.
  • 5. Amped up fruity drinks.

Fresh, flavorful…and healthy? McDonald’s has tried to capture the non-coffee cafe crowd with a range of fruit smoothies and fruit iced teas.  This is similar to Starbucks Shaken line.

So with McDonald’s, along with several other fast food chains, battling to be first in the breakfast market, the first concern is usually the water quality. Remember, 98% of most breakfast drinks (teas and coffees) are water. So if you’re looking to perfect you coffee and lattes, give us a call. We know exactly where to start. 800-942-7873

The Unfiltered Truth

The truth is, Filter Pure and Pentair/Everpure have filtration solutions that give you more than just great-tasting water. Our filtration systems also extend the life of your water-using equipment. We can show you how custom-configured filtration can add years of service to those expensive foodservice systems. Equipment damage is just one of the unfiltered truths that is costing you money. Your combi-oven or ice machine might look nice and shiny and well kept on the outside, but take a look inside. You might be surprised at what you find. For instance:   • Limescale – this winter wonderland of calcium will buildup on heating elements and boilers, slowly choking the life of your combi-oven.

• Corrosion – water contaminants show no mercy when they attack metal, nylon and rubber components. Kiss your shiny ice machine goodbye.

• Particulates – these little soldier of sediment and debris might be small, but when they join forces their only mission is to clog system lines and tubing.

The taste and quality of your water is important to us, but we know the damage that unfiltered (or poorly filtered) water can cause on your water-using equipment. Don’t let limescale, corrosion, or particulates break you down. Let us break THEM down with our water filtration systems. Let us know how we can help. Call us at 800-942-7873.

Save the Planet, One Bottle at a Time

It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles. Altogether, Americans’ used over 50 billion plastic water bottles last year alone. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great! So, how does one cut out all the plastic bottles from their life but still get great tasting water straight from their tap? By purchasing a high performance drinking water system, that goes under your your kitchen sink. This system uses the same water purification process as Dasani and Nestle and it is called reverse osmosisThis process is used in water purification, manufacturing plants, and chemical laboratories.  One great unit that we recommend is the the PURA QCRO4V. This 4 stage quick change reverse osmosis system can be customized to adapt to changing water conditions. The quick change filters feature the innovative PURA twist and lock design, making filter changes and service fast and easy.

  • Choice of a 50 gpd or 75 gpd membrane
  • Standard Lead Free Air Gap Faucet
  • Color coded tubing for easier installation
  • Quick connect fittings and a self piercing feed valve
  • Interchangeable filters allows the system to be customized to your local water conditions
  • Produces high quality water for better tasting coffee, tea, juices, soups, sauces and pasta and clearer ice cubes
  • System includes a sediment pre-filter, carbon block pre-filter, RO membrane and carbon block postfilter

The first stage of filtration is the sediment filter, which reduces suspended particles such as dirt, dust, and rust. The second stage of filtration is the carbon filter. This filter reduces volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), chlorine, and other compounds that might impact the taste or odor of the tap water. Chlorine should be removed from the water before the water enters the membrane. This will help preserve the life of the membrane. The center and third stage of a reverse osmosis system is the semi-permeable (RO) membrane. It is responsible for rejecting up to 98% of the total dissolved solids in the water. So you can save the planet, save money and drink healthier water! For more information about this system call 800-942-7873 or click the link below to ask us a question.

University Upgrades

Universities around the nation are upgrading or remodeling their cafeterias and concession stands. Whether they are getting ready for the new school year or football season, they are preparing for the multiple number of students and fans that will be joining them for the start of the new fall season. Filter Pure helps with this preparation by assisting them with all their water filtration needs. The most common filtration need with cafeterias and concession stands is their combination units, serving soda and ice. To make sure these units are serving delicious ice cold beverages, Filter Pure recommends the High Flow CSR Quad 4FC (EV9329-44). This provides you with a pre-filter, 4 filtering cartridges and a scale inhibitor. This system is rated for 60,000 gallon capacity, 3 carbonators, 1,500 lbs. of ice production and up to 4 brewing pots of coffee. The filter on this system, the 4FC cartridge (EV9692-21), is rated for 15,000 gallon capacity at a .5 micron rating. They are NSF 42 and 53 standard, with chlorine, taste and odor, particulate, bacteriostatic and cyst reduction.  These can be sized according to your needs. For example, if you needed more gallons capacity, like 100,000 gallons, you would use the 7FC cartridge.

As the Universities are working to better the experience for students and/or sports fans with the food options provided, they are also making sure the water used is safe, reliable and tastes great. We are proud to help them with all their water filter needs!

For more information on how we can help you on this system or others like it for your University or School please contact Amy Easter @ amy@filterpure.com or call 800-942-7873.

Chlorination Nation!

Decades ago, municipalities started adding ammonia to the chlorinated water treatment to boost the effectiveness in making water safe for consumption. As you can see in the chart above, Florida is one of the largest users. Chloramine is a combination of both chlorine and ammonia designed to strengthen the chlorine, making it last longer through the municipal water system. Chloraminated water is blended at the municipal water treatment site. It is monitored daily and after a large amount of rain, it is then blended a little stronger to handle the extra amount of water in the supply.  The ammonia in the water has created new types of problems that commercial equipment must deal with. Chloramines damage gaskets and o-rings and react with sweeteners in fountain syrups to form compounds that impact the taste. The activated carbon filters we used in the past are not as effective in removing  chloramine as they were with chlorine. So new types of filters and filter systems have been designed to deal with this problem. We constantly recommended the Everpure Series of CLM filters; the EV9278-11, EV9278-12, EV9278-13, and the EV9278-14.

All are not only rated for Chloramine but are NSF 42 and 53 certified. They have also been specified by Coca-Cola after testing with the new Coke Freestyle unitFor even larger capacity applications, the Everpure CB20 series can supply up to 5 gallons per minute for up to 85,000 gallons of water. If you have a chloramine problem, let us know right away. To find out what chemicals your municipality is using and what filtration can best take care of your water, call us at 800-942-7873. The Artisan Soda Trend Gains Momentum

Restaurant consultants at Baum + Whiteman predicted that 2014 would be the year of the artisan soda. Given the popularity of at-home machines like SodaStream and with Starbucks launch in June of a new line of “handcrafted” sodas, it looks like they were right.  After piloting the products in Atlanta and Austin last year, the coffee giant rolled out a trio of summer sodas in the US that resurrect retro flavors with Spiced Root Beer, Golden Ginger Ale and Lemon Ale.

Freshness and originality are becoming increasingly important buying factors for today’s restaurant-goers. Operators have continued to bolster their drink programs with premium water and craft-soda options, which offer customers a more enhanced beverage experience than traditional mass-market picks. As restaurant operators have worked to develop their own Artisan sodas they have found that it all starts with the water.

The right Artisan water system can meet the challenge of dispensing consistently clean, cold and long lasting carbonated water. Designed with a patented cold carbonation process, the Crysalli Artisan Water System delivers longer lasting carbonation, about twice as long as a cold plate carbonation system while using about half the CO2. Generating smaller bubbles, Crysalli water not only presents well, it absorbs more aroma molecules than large bubbles, so you get silky smooth water dispensed at an average of 36˚F.

The Crysalli CR-UCM2

Crysalli under counter units even have the capability of supporting multiple dispensing towers. This gives restaurant operators the ability to create self service Artisan Water Stations in the dining room, while also giving their Mixologist staff the ability to create “handcrafted” sodas behind the counter. Multiple water filtration options for the Crysalli systems come from the most trusted name in water filtration, Pentair/Everpure. They feature the Everpure 4FC (EV9692-21) long life mechanical filtration filter that removes off tastes, chlorine, odors, colors and particles as small as half a micron from the water while retaining the essential minerals in the water for great flavor profiles and carbonation.  For more information on Crysalli Artisan Water please call our team at 800-942-7873 or enter your question below. How Filtration Can Go Wrong

A couple years ago, a luxury hotel had attempted to filter their entire water supply. Their desire was to provide their guest with the best experience possible.  While with good intentions this also gave way to some negative consequences.  Understanding what to remove and what to leave in your water supply can affect not just the taste and odor of the water, but the safety of the water as well.  This particular facility had wanted to remove all the chlorine from their incoming water supply and made the decision to utilize a whole building system to do so.  The side effect of removing all antibacterial properties in a large water system is the introduction of bacterial growth after the point of entry system.  This bacteria growth will occur in the piping after the filtration system and will cause exposure to the user’s downstream. What Filter Pure would have recommended was utilizing a mechanical filtered system with Ultraviolet at the point of entry. This would eliminate any possible contaminants entry into the building water supply.  It also maintains the appropriate levels of disinfectant to ensure pipes are not permitting bacterial growth. For taste and odor concern, these should always be handled at the point of use with a system similar to the Insurice Single PF-i2000 system (EV9324-21).  We recommend Everpure for all water point of use systems. Every location has different water quality concerns that require direct and special attention. If you have any questions regarding your facility’s water filtration systems, please contact me, Todd Leach, or our customer service team at 1-800-942-7873. Ask me a questions!
