Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Filter Pure Systems!

This year on March 17th all of us will celebrate many beautiful things about the Irish culture. What originally began as a religious holiday has grown to a day of celebrating Irish culture, dancing, parades, a lot of green and the luck of the Irish. While many will hit pubs and bars to enjoy the very best in green beverages, restaurants are making sure that they are ready for the big day tomorrow too. Last year over 126 million people in the U.S. celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and average spending was $37 per person. That would make the total spent last year more than $4.6 billion dollars. That’s BILLION with a B. Thankfully at Filter Pure Systems we have you covered to make sure your kitchen equipment is ready for the big day and the celebration to continue into this weekend.

One of our most popular items is the Everpure High-flow CSR Quad MC2 System (EV9437-10). This NSF 42 and NSF 53 system with bacteriostatic system , includes the 20” pre-filter, EV9534-12 that captures large dirt particles and the very famous MC2, EV9612-56,( “Note lucky Irish Green Color on the cartridge). However, nothing has been left to chance with the MC2, EV9612-56 in providing crystal clear “Filtered Pure” water using Everpure pre-coat filtration technology that removes asbestos fibers and cysts such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Entamoeba.  This system provides two sources of treated water with the addition of the SR-X Scale inhibitor to help keep scale from building up in the ice machines and coffee brewers.  It has an overall capacity of 36,000 gallons. Many restaurants favor this system because it not only helps protect  kitchen equipment but it can take care of multiple appliances at a time while also making sure that customers are getting the best drinks possible. A customer can tell right away by simply having a glass of water if your water is being treated and if you care about the quality of the beverages and food that you are serving in your facility. Make sure to make your first impression count.  If you have any questions about this system or need assistance in your water treatment solutions please e mail us at info@filterpure.com or call us at 1-800-942-7873 and a customer representative will happily assist you.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us at Filter Pure Systems. Make sure to wear green on the 17th and contact us so we can help save you some green on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day!

Water her wishes for Valentine’s Day?

The second most popular holiday for dining out after Mother’s Day is Valentine’s Day and this year is expected to be exceptionally busy. According to the National Restaurant Association’s latest research, about one-quarter of Americans dine out on Valentine’s Day, that’s about 90,000,000. According to the National Retail Federation, 2016 will set a record for spending contributing $19.7 billion to the economy up from a record $18.9 billion in 2015. Keep in mind that younger people who are still trying to impress potential mates are the largest participants. Nearly two-thirds of those between 25 and 34 will celebrate the holiday, and 60% of those between 18 and 24. With everything that’s been happening in the news lately regarding drinking water, make sure that your Restaurant’s table water is ready to make a great first impression also. You can be sure that if your water is off color with a bad taste or odor this weekend, it’s not only going to reflect poorly on the person who recommended your restaurant as the beginning of a new romance, but may have the saving grace of being a great conversation starter comparing your water to that of Flint Michigan’s water if they stick around to eat. Either way it is certainly something that is easy to avoid, as easy as making sure that your water filters have been changed or if you don’t already have one, installing an Everpure water filtration system to take care of all of the beverages and ice that you are serving.  If you already have an Everpure system, it is essential that filters be replaced periodically. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water.

Prefilter, ( First bowl to left, system above)

The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.

Submicron Cartridges ( 3 in the middle system pictured above)

The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.

Scalestick  ( cartridge in last bowl to right pictured in system above)

The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

You should also replace your water filters whenever you notice a decline in performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure, or an unusual taste in the water. You should also, per the CDC, replace your water filter after any boil water advisory alert is lifted in your area. Remember: taste and odor may tip you off to the presence of chlorine in your water, but most contaminants are tasteless and odorless.

For the benefit of our customers, we have set-up automatic electronic reminders that are sent when we see that their filters are due to be replaced, based on order history.  We can even set-up Auto-Ship for customers that know they will need water filters by a certain date, but may not remember to place an order.

If you have a question regarding how often you should replace your filter or not sure about the filter system that you have please email your questions and a picture of the system to info@filterpure.com or call our team at 1-800-942-7873 and have a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Flint, Michigan Water Crisis! What water filters really take out lead!

If you had to take a guess of where the above water came from where would you choose?  A place far away from here?  Would you be surprised if I told you this water came from here in the USA?  The above water is from Flint, Michigan.  This is a story that has made headlines across the country and has even started trending in social media with #flintwatercrisis and #flintcontaminatedwater.  Celebrities and others have generously donated money and bottled water to help those in need.  This water crisis has officially been declared a state of emergency. We won’t get into the history of what happened in detail but to summarize here is what is going on in Flint, Michigan.

  • In 2014 the city switches its main water supply from Detroit’s system to the Flint River in order to save money.
  • People living in the area begin to complain about the taste, odor and color of the water.  Others begin to report rashes and show concerns about bacteria
  • In January 2015 Detroit offers to reconnect the water waiving the $4 million connection fee.
  • The city declines the offer
  • In February 2015 a water test is shown that water from one person’s home has 104 parts per billion of lead.
  • More tests are shown to have high levels of lead.
  • Doctors begin to report that children are being treated for lead poisoning.
  • Residents have been advised to NOT drink from the tap water.
  • Flint, Michigan officially declares a State of Emergency.

Dealing with contaminated water is something Filter Pure Systems and Pentair/Everpure have always been prepared for.  Our products are designed to make water drinkable and safe to use for your kitchen equipment.  On January 19th, 2016 the WQA , Water Quality Association Addressed the Drinking Water Crisis in Flint, Michigan offering facts and tips about treating for lead contamination and noted that ;

“Lead (Pb) has been identified as the waterborne contaminant of primary concern for Flint’s residents. To minimize the presence of contaminants such as lead, which may enter the water after it has left a municipal treatment facility, WQA recommends water treatment equipment that has been certified by an ANSI (American National Standards Institute)-accredited certification body. Such accredited entities include WQA’s Gold Seal Product Certification Program. Filter Pure Systems offers and recommends the following Everpure filters and systems that meet these criteria in the removal of lead and are perfect for your under the kitchen sink (POU) point of use application;

The original POU, (Point of Use) Everpure OW Family for lead reduction;

The OW200L (P/N EV9619-01) has a rated capacity of 480 gallons. Its overall dimensions are 17″H x 3.25″ diameter. Its service flow rate is at maximum 0.5 gpm. Rated NSF 53 for Lead reduction. The OW2-PLUS (P/N EV9634-01) and the OW4-PLUS (P/N EV9635-01) are essentially the same as the OW200L. The only difference is their capacity rating and size. The OW2-PLUS is rated at 1,000 gallons and 10.25″H x 3.25″ Diameter. The OW4-PLUS is rated at 2,000 gallons and 14.5″H x 3.25″ diameter. But unlike the OW200L, they both contain a KDF media that can remove lead to below the Federal Action Level of 10 ppb. All the OW replacement water filter cartridges are NSF Certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53,

The New 2016 POU, (Point of Use) Line of High Capacity Lead Reduction Water Filter Cartridges, the Everpure FC-L;

Pentair is pleased to announce the launch of a new family of Everpure-branded high capacity lead reduction cartridges. The FC-L product line is available in 4- and 7-cartridge sizes, with and without scale inhibitor. The FC-L line offers 0.5 micron filtration, a 1.8 gpm flow rate per 4-size cartridge, a 2.7 gpm flow rate per 7-size cartridge, and proprietary Fibredyne™ II technology for superior chlorine reduction and dirt-holding capabilities plus lead reduction. Espresso Water Trick or Treat?

Ever had a bad espresso experience? Espresso is 85-96% water and that water is extremely important to delivering not only a great shot of espresso but not damaging a very expensive espresso machine. If the operator gets the water wrong this season you may find a ghostly taste in your coffee beverage. Chlorine can alter the aroma and increases acidity. It also bonds with organics creating an earthy or moldy overtone to the flavor. TDS, (total dissolved solids), can cause poor extraction of the grounds, under extraction leads to weak and sour drinks and over extraction leads to bitterness so taking care to treat coffee and espresso beverage water is extremely important.  From Starbucks to Dunkin the 2015 seasonal holiday specialty beverage season ramps up this week with Halloween and with it some of the most popular coffee beverages ever inspired by a season. Who hasn’t had a Pumpkin Spiced Latte?  This year’s current seasonal line up for Starbucks now includes the Toasted Graham Latte, the Salted Caramel Mocha and the Iced Vanilla Spiced Latte. Dunkin Doughnuts has their own Pumpkin Latte and Peet’s their Mayan Mocha! These hot seasonal espresso beverages have proven to increase sales and have succeeded for all of these chains and a lot of independent operators too by drawing in customers early and often during the holiday season. People don’t want to miss out on limited time seasonal offers and for a lot of us these drinks are now part of our memories of enjoying and celebrating the holiday season. Regardless of which one is your favorite, operators know and work diligently to make sure that all of these beverages begin with a great shot of espresso.  Everpure continues to lead the Industry in taking care of the ghosts in the water, by working directly with Specialty Coffee Operators and Espresso Equipment Manufactures. From the ESO and Claris cartridge systems delivering filtered softened water through salt less ion exchange to the blended reverse osmosis line of MRS, Mineral Reduction Systems, we have a solution to turn  the water operators are dealing with into the engineered water they need to deliver the espresso beverage that meets their specifications. For espresso, that means a softer water that also protects the equipment from both hard water scale and chloride, For example the, La Marzocco GB/5 Commercial Espresso Machine manual notes; For an operator the place to begin is with a POE, point of entry standard Everpure water test, DEV7013-73. This test includes the water bottle and lab analysis of 30 contaminants and characteristics. The test usually takes from 7 to 10 days to analyze at the laboratory located in Chicago and the following is a sample of the delivered analysis; https://dev-filterpure.pantheonsite.io/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Untitled3.jpgThis water would be way out of specification for the Marzocco with hardness of 257 ppm and chlorides of over 308.8ppm the recommendation would be an Everpure MRS Blended reverse osmosis system to actually take the mineral and chloride out of the water and deliver water with the correct specification of both hardness between 90ppm and 150ppm and chlorides of less than 50ppm. The size of the MRS unit is determined according to the amount of beverage water that will be needed at peak operating time within the facility. For example the MRS600HEII will make 600 gallons of water every 24 hours or 25 gph, (gallons per hour). The MRS350Bl will make 350 gallons every 24 hours or 14.58 gph, (gallons per hour). Not to worry though just call us and we will take care of sizing the equipment you need for your equipment. Everpure Espresso Solutions; The ESO7, EV9607-25 (ESO stands for Espresso, the 7 just means the size of the filter cartridge) is a three-in-one system providing filtration, scale prevention and buffering/softening of  the water. The water retains enough mineral to bring out the espresso flavors. The ESO7 will take care of up to 5,300 grains of hardness or at 8 grains of hardness will generate 511 gallons of espresso before it will need to be changed. The Claris XXL, EV4339-14, unit will give you the same great 3 in 1 filter but also give you the ability to generate 2,910 gallons of espresso, ( at 10 grains of hardness) but also has an adjustable DUOBLEND™ bypass valve that allows for a more precise adjustment of carbonate hardness. Either system is quick to install, easy to handle and fast to service. Everpure has developed an entire series of Blended MRS, Mineral Reduction System Reverse Osmosis units. From the MRS20, (20 stands for 20 gallons made per day), EV9797-, up to the MRS600HEII, (600 gallons made per day), EV9970-54. One of the most popular for the coffee and espresso application is the EV99-17. Note that all of these solutions require a storage tank. These systems can be sized to fit one piece of equipment or all of the coffee, espresso, beverage, etc..equipment that you are using to insure that the water you are using will protect your equipment from whatever changes occur within your water supply and provide the perfect water and ice for your beverages. Not sure of what you need to do to take care of the ghosts in your water? Give us a call at 800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com.

Can water filters help prevent breast cancer?

Could something as simple as putting an activated carbon based water filter on your kitchen sink prevent or lower the risk of breast cancer for you and your family? Thousands of American municipalities add chlorine to their drinking water to get rid of microbes and kill bacteria in our drinking water.  But this inexpensive and highly effective disinfectant also interacts with organic compounds to create trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). THMs and HAAs are formed by reactions between chlorine and organic material such as humic acids and fulvic acids (both generated from the decay of organic matter) to create halogenated organics. —which when ingested encourage the growth of free radicals that can destroy or damage vital cells in the body. Recent studies have shown that chlorine and its by-products increase the risk of developing malignant melanoma, bowel, breast and bladder cancer. Researchers have found links between common chlorine disinfectant and breast cancer, which affects one out of every eight American women. A recent study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut found that women with breast cancer have 50-60 percent higher levels of organochlorines (chlorine by-products) in their breast tissue than cancer-free women. The fact of the matter is that if you live anywhere where the water is being treated with Chlorine you can inexpensively remove the risk of your exposure to it by installing a carbon-based filter containing activated carbon, which absorbs chlorine and other contaminants. Activated carbon surface properties are both hydrophobic and oleophilic; that is, they “hate” water but “love” oil. When flow conditions are suitable, dissolved chemicals in water flowing over the carbon surface “stick” to the carbon in a thin film while the water passes on. This process is called adsorption. As a result of the adsorption process, activated carbon is an effective method in removing chlorine and it’s by-products (TTHM’s) and volatile organic compounds (carbon based VOC’s), both, man-made and naturally occurring. Activated carbon is a natural material derived from bituminous coal, lignite, wood, coconut shell etc., activated by steam and other means and each one have different adsorption properties (e.g. bituminous carbon for high chlorine reduction capacity). Some manufacturers use various blends of carbon to achieve specific water quality and contaminants reduction (e.g. coconut shell carbon for “sweet taste”).

Everpure has an entire line of filters containing Micro-Pure® carbon designed to remove chlorine and chlorine by products including THMs generating premium quality drinking water for your home and office. Filter Pure recommends the Everpure OW, (Office Water) Family of water filters. Their unique filter blend uses activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor and offensive contaminants down to ½ micron in size even taking out water borne cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. All the OW replacement water filter cartridges are NSF Certified under NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53, the OW200L (P/N EV9619-01) , OW2-PLUS (P/N EV9634-01) , and OW4-PLUS (P/N EV9635-01). We also carry the 4C cartridge (EV9600-00) and new line of Everpure (Fibredyne II)  FC-L cartridges. ASHRAE STANDARD 188 Ice Machine Compliance

To date in 2015 we have seen large outbreaks of Legionella in both New York and Chicago sickening over 174 and killing 20. Legionnaires’ Disease is not very common, but when there is an outbreak in a hospital, hotel or casino, the story makes headlines. This is because an outbreak often results in severe illness or, more tragically, loss of life, and millions of dollars in lawsuits. Legionnaires’ Disease, also known as Legionellosis, is caused by a bacteria (L. pneumophila) that is found in certain water supplies. For people with weakened immune systems, the disease can lead to a fatal case of pneumonia which is why there is high concern about the risk of Legionella in hospitals.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hospital patients who contract Legionella only have a 20%-60% chance of surviving.( Bartram, Chartier, Lee, Pond, Surman-Lee (2007). Legionella and the prevention of legionellosis. World Health Organization, 1.1.1:2.). Pentair Everpure has earned its worldwide reputation as a trusted name in water treatment. Our more than 80 years of expertise has yielded filtration solutions that provide superior quality water. We have specially-designed filtration systems to help protect patients and staff from the waterborne bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ Disease.

HOW DOES ASHRAE STANDARD 188 IMPACT ICE MACHINES?

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), one of the reasons that ASHRAE Standard 188:  Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems is being developed to help prevent the high fatality rate for hospital patients that contract Legionella. This standard is designed to prevent the bacteria from entering and/ or reproducing in a hospital water system. The standard places responsibility for water safety on everyone associated with the design, construction, installation, ownership, operation, management, and maintenance of a building’s water system. The cold water dispensers of hospital ice machines have been proven to be a potential source of Legionella. Two studies, in 1985 and 1997, traced Legionella directly to the ice.2 ASHRAE Standard 188P requires that the HACCP plan include all potable water systems, including ice machines. If the potable water system, such as an ice machine, has “incoming potable water containing less than 0.5 mg/l residual halogen such as chlorine”, it is a risk factor for Legionella. 2   Stout JE, Yu VL, Muraca P (1985). Isolation of Legionella pneumophila from the cold water of hospital ice machines:  implications for origin and transmission of the organism. Infection Control, 6:141–146. 7SI Pentair® Everpure® has cost-effective, application-specific filtration systems that will allow a hospital to keep its ice machines in compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188, and help provide critical protection from protozoan cysts and scale damage: the 4SI and 7SI Carbonless Water Filters from Pentair Everpure. These unique water filters provide a number of important benefits: •  Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188. Allow municipal chlorine and chloramine residual to pass through to the ice machine. •  Slime Reduction. Chlorine can help to reduce the growth of slime and bacteria inside the ice machine. •  Cyst Reduction. Submicron media reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia that can cause waterborne diseases in humans (reduction occurs by mechanical means*). •  Scale Protection. Scale inhibitor reduces scale deposits that can cause downtime, maintenance calls and increased service costs. Scale can also result in the clogging of distribution lines, freeze-up on evaporator plates, and cause pumps, solenoids and probes to malfunction or fail. •  Particulate Reduction. Pentair’s proprietary Fibredyne™ media has superior dirt-holding capabilities versus conventional carbon block filters. •  Retrofits Everpure Brand Filter Heads. Quickly and easily convert Everpure Insurice®, 4/7CB5-S and 7FC-S Systems to 4SI and 7SI Systems simply by swapping out the filter cartridges. There’s no need to remove an old filter head and invest in a new one, which saves you money and labor. •  The 4SI System Fits in Tight Spaces. Its space-saving size allows for easy placement behind a countertop ice machine or inside a cabinet. •  Easy to Install and Maintain. •  Certified to NSF Standards 42 and 53. •  Carries the Pentair Everpure Name. Everpure has been providing water solutions for over 80 years, and is one of the most respected brands in water filtration worldwide. The New Claris Ultra!

We are proud to introduce the next step in the Claris filtration line. The Claris Ultra is the world’s first filter cartridge to combine mineral reduction and corrosion protection within one compact unit. As a result, Claris Ultra delivers the very best quality water for hot drinks and ice machines while also preventing scale formation in machines and inhibiting corrosion of materials across the widest range of water hardness levels. This breakthrough is achieved by using new patent pending water conditioning technology; in effect a highly engineered water conditioning system that uses the synergetic effect of mineral adaptation and mineral stabilization, all within one compact filter package. The result is optimum water mineral extraction, ie retaining the necessary minerals for a pleasant flavor and proper extraction of the coffee bean and grind, while minimizing the minerals that lead to limescale. Similarly, in ice production, Claris Ultra eliminates those minerals that cause cloudy and soft ice and lead to scaled ice machines, low energy efficiency and scale amplified bio-film formation. Everpure’s Claris Ultra filter range has successfully addressed the challenge of finding the right balance between protecting an operation’s investment and capturing the desired quality of brewed coffee, espresso, other hot drinks and ice cubes. The Claris Ultra filters use the same head as the existing Claris cartridge range.

Claris Ultra Filter Cartridges features

  • First cartridge to effectively combine lime scale and corrosion protection
  • More capacity / lower costs for hot drinks and ice cube machines
