What about your water and water filtration system after Hurricane ETA?

Provided the water in your area does not fall under a “Do not use”, boil water alert, your filter system and filters unless damaged by the storm should be fine. If your area does fall under a boil water alert you should change all filters and membranes installing new, unused filters or membrane cartridges after you have completely sanitized your system. Boil water alerts are often issued by water municipalities when damage occurs to water lines.  These alerts can also be issued if there is a loss in water pressure, allowing bacteria to backwash into the water pipes. Minerals and viruses like E.coli, cryptosporidium, and giardia, are all things that may get into water when a pipe breaks or during a natural disaster, like flooding. Below is Everpure’s Technical Service Bulletin regarding water quality emergencies and the procedures to place your system back into operation after a boil water alert.
Everpure Technical Service Bulletin
File No: 011414
Subject: Responding to Water Quality Emergencies
RESPONDING TO WATER QUALITY EMERGENCIES
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes cause contamination of municipal water systems over a large area. Industrial and other chemical leaks can also cause contamination of water supplies. If a water quality emergency occurs in your location, follow your local municipality’s instructions for addressing the emergency. If a boil order is issued, follow that boil order advisory until you have been notified by local authorities that your water is potable and safe to use.
Following is our recommended procedure for cleaning and start-up of Pentair water treatment systems using Pentair filters and RO membranes for commercial foodservice applications.
PENTAIR® OBEYING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES:
Obey them, period!
Contamination due to breaks in the mains, general flooding, or damage to the municipal waterworks itself should not be confused with situations in which contamination by protozoan cysts (e.g. Cryptosporidium, Giardia) is discovered in a water supply. Everpure submicron filters and RO membranes are NSF-Certified for removing such cysts, but not for killing or removing dangerous bacteria and viruses, which must be assumed to be present during the aftermath of a disaster, chemical spill or other water emergency.
When a Boil Water Advisory is announced and it is clear that there has been gross contamination, operators should stop using their filtration or RO system and boil their water as advised by their local authorities, until:

  1. The “all clear” is given by local water authorities
  2. Plumbing systems in your facility have been disinfected
  3. Your Pentair system has been cleaned and any old or contaminated filter or RO cartridges have been replaced with new ones
    CLEANUP OF PENTAIR SYSTEMS:
When safe water is available again, all water-using equipment should be sanitized with an approved disinfectant such as diluted chlorine bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite). The recommended dosage is 100-200 mg/L chlorine, which is easy to make. Fresh bleach has about 50 mg of chlorine in each mL, or about 500 mg in a capful. Four capfuls or an ounce in a 2-1/2 gal. bucket of water makes about 200 mg/L. Add a few drops of cleaning concentrate (e.g. dish detergent) to this solution and use it to clean external surfaces. Unexposed, interior plumbing surfaces can be sanitized in place using a Pentair Everpure JT Sanitizing/Flushing Cartridge. (Contact your local distributor or sales agent to acquire the JT can). This is an empty housing which can be filled with any cleaning or sanitizing solution and then be inserted into Everpure-branded filter heads. When the flow of water resumes, the disinfectant will be fed into the lines. When a strong chlorine smell is evident at the closest outlet, the flow should be stopped and the sanitizing solution left to soak for at least 30 minutes. When sanitization is complete, remove the flushing cartridge and install new, unused filters or membrane cartridges. Rinse the equipment by flushing water through the system as directed in your system’s Installation and Operation manual. Return your filtration or RO system to service.
    POST-EMERGENCY SYSTEM OPERATION:
Follow the replacement cartridge change-out schedule per your system’s specifications. We suggest that you continue to monitor and follow your local water authority’s post-emergency recommendations. Please note that water problems caused by natural disasters often include high turbidity, even muddy, conditions. As a result, filter cartridges may clog faster and need replacing sooner than usual.

Keeping your Commercial Ice Machine disinfected and free from Covid-19 may be as easy as changing the Water Filter.

According to the current CDC guidelines regarding drinking water disinfection;

“The virus that causes COVID-19 has not been detected in treated drinking water. Water treatment plants use filters and disinfectants to remove or kill germs, like the virus that causes COVID-19. The Environmental Protection Agency regulates water treatment plants to ensure that treated water is safe to drink. Currently, there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people by drinking treated water. COVID-19 is spread mainly through close contact from person-to-person. You can continue to use and drink water from your tap as usual.”

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fphp%2Fwater.html#COVID-19-and-Water

So the free chlorine that is still available in your municipal water, introduced by your local water treatment plant according to EPA Guidelines to oxidize any germs in the water can continue to work in your ice machine provided you don’t filter it out with a water filter that contains carbon. If you are already using an Everpure water filtration system containing carbon like the i2000, EV961222/27 or the i4000 EV961232/37 you just need to change to the 4SI or 7SI Everpure carbonless cartridge/s.

EV9606-51, 4SI with a rated capacity of 15,000 gallons.

EV9606-01, 7SI  Rated capacity of 25,000 gallons.

Developed originally to help with the fight of Legionella in Hospitals, Pentair® Everpure® designed the 7SI and 4SI  to help hospitals keep their ice machines in compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188p, and help provide critical protection from protozoan cysts and scale. These unique water filters supply a  number of important benefits:

•  Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188p. Allow municipal chlorine and chloramine residual to pass through to the ice machine.

•  Slime Reduction. Chlorine can help to reduce the growth of slime and bacteria inside the ice machine.

•  Cyst Reduction. Submicron media reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia that can cause waterborne diseases in humans (reduction occurs by mechanical means*).

•  Scale Protection. Scale inhibitor reduces scale deposits that can cause downtime, maintenance calls and increased service costs. Scale can also result in the clogging of distribution lines, freeze-up on evaporator plates, and cause pumps, solenoids and probes to malfunction or fail.

 •  Particulate Reduction. Pentair’s proprietary Fibredyne™ media has superior dirt-holding capabilities versus conventional carbon block filters. •  Retrofits Everpure Brand Filter Heads. Quickly and easily convert Everpure Insurice®, 4/7CB5-S and 7FC-S Systems to 4SI and 7SI Systems simply by swapping out the filter cartridges. There’s no need to remove an old filter head and invest in a new one, which saves you money and labor.

•  The 4SI System Fits in Tight Spaces. Its space-saving size allows for easy placement behind a countertop ice machine or inside a cabinet.

•  Easy to Install and Maintain.

•  Certified to NSF Standards 42 and 53.

•  Carries the Pentair Everpure Name. Everpure has been providing water solutions for over 80 years, and is one of the most respected brands in water filtration worldwide.

Staying hydrated and avoiding heat stroke as the heat index approaches 112 degrees!

It’s already 95 plus in South Florida and according to a recent NOAA forecast this heat will be sticking around until September! Heat-related illnesses occur when your body can’t keep itself cool. As the temperature rises, your body dissolves sweat to stay cool. On hot, humid days, the increased moisture in the air slows down this process. When your body can’t cool, your temperature rises and you can become ill. Hot weather and exercise are the main causes of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. In hot settings, you need to be mindful of the temperature outside. The heat index is not the same as the temperature. It measures the air temperature plus the effects of humidity. A heat index of 90°F or higher is dangerous. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures increases your risk of heat-related illnesses.

If a person is displaying known heat illness symptoms, take their temperature. A reading of 104°F or more means they probably have heatstroke. You should call 911 and get medical care right away. There are many things you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses. Babies, children, and elderly people are more sensitive to heat and require extra attention. You also are at greater risk if you are ill or obese, or have heart disease. People who work outside or in a hot setting also are at risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Don’t go outside when the temperature and heat index are high. If possible, stay indoors in air-conditioned areas. If you must go outside, take the following precautions.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
  • Avoid or limit drinks that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee, and soda) or alcohol.
  • Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat and outdoor activities.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration and lack of salt contribute to heat-related illnesses. Some sports drinks can help replenish the salt in your body lost through sweating. Drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If your urine is clear, you are probably drinking enough fluids. Dark-colored urine is a sign that you’re dehydrated.

Looking to create your very own hydration station at home! You may want to consider an Industry top seller like the H-300 drinking water system. The same commercial quality that makes Pentair® Everpure the overwhelming choice for water filtration in restaurants is also available for your home. Pentair Everpure exclusive precoat filtration technology combines Micro-Pure® and a unique pleated filter membrane. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announces Phase 2 reopening of bars, movie theaters and bowling alleys to start Friday!

Bars and pubs will now be able to operate at 50 percent capacity indoors and at full capacity outdoors, and entertainment businesses such as movie theaters and bowling alleys can open at 50 percent capacity beginning on Friday as well. Personal service businesses such as tattoo parlors may reopen as well, and people can begin gathering in groups of 50 or less, starting Friday.

Re-opening your Restaurant or Food Service Facility? If you are an owner operator and have been shut down for an extended period of time, Pentair Everpure has the following guidance for your water treatment system;

Filtration systems are designed to be operated on a continuous basis with only relatively short periods of down time (overnight and holidays). When a system is shut down for an extended period of time, there is a potential for microbiologic growth. To address concerns with system operation after the shutdown, please follow the below instructions. This is applicable to all Pentair filtration systems (i.e., pre-filters, carbon-based cartridges and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems).

Periodic Flushing In cases where the customer knows that the system will be down for an extended time and is able to get to the system on a periodic basis, follow the below flushing procedure every 3-4 days:

Filtration Systems
Flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
Empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush through all ports.
Shutdown for Less Than or Equal to 7 Days:

Filtration Systems
When you put the system back into operation, flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
When you put the system back into operation, empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 10 minutes through all ports.

Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days:

All Systems (Filtration and RO)
Remove all existing filtration elements that are present in the system (pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges) and dispose. Disinfect the system as instructed in the applicable Installation and Operations Guide for that specific system.
After the disinfection process is complete, replace the filtration elements with all new pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges. Flush the system as instructed in the applicable IO Guide to complete the procedure.

Softeners
Initiate a manual regeneration.
Shutdown for Greater Than 30 Days:
Softeners
Disinfect per the Installation and Operation Guide for that specific unit. Generally speaking, it is adding some bleach to the brine tank before initiating a manual regeneration.

Assumptions
Pentair assumes the following in providing this guidance: Incoming water is potable.

There is no boil-water advisory or boil-water order issued by the applicable public health or governmental authority.

System is being maintained within normal operating temperature and other conditions as set forth in the applicable specification sheet.

If you have concerns or cannot confirm these assumptions for the system, follow the instructions above under the section entitled “Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days”.

Florida ramps up reopening!

Many Fitness Centers and Gyms reopened to Members waiting outside yesterday as Governor DeSantis continued to move to phase two of Florida’s reopening. Restaurants and Retail were also allowed to expand to 50% capacity after being limited to 25% occupancy since May 4! Under the guidelines laid out by the governor, gyms can reopen at up to 50% capacity with social distancing measures in place. DeSantis also urged people to take precautions as they work out.

Florida is ready for phase 2 !

After an incredibly successful phase 1 opening for Restaurants and Retail throughout Florida starting last Monday. Governor Desantis allowed Hair and Nail Salons to reopen this week and it sounds like he is now ready to move Florida into Phase Two with an announcement later today!

Bars, pubs, and nightclubs that derive more than 50 percent of sales from alcohol will be able to operate at 50 percent of building capacity with an emphasis on diminished standing room capacity and prioritizing outdoor service, according to the governor’s plan. Gyms and fitness centers will be able to operate at 75% capacity. Restaurants will be able to increase occupancy to 75%, if appropriate social distancing and a minimum of 6-feet separates parties. The plan says that in phase two, theme parks could consider reopening with capacity limits, strict social distancing and proper measures to clean and disinfect. Sporting events will be encouraged to limit the occupancy of venues to 50 percent and will have to practice strict social distancing during phase two.
