Waffle House Crisis Index for Covid-19 now at lite Green! Re-Opens 330 Restaurant Dining Rooms in Georgia!

The Waffle House Crisis Index is well known down here in the South as an informal leading indicator of just how bad things really are, usually a weather indicator. All of its wonderful restaurants, (author loves their waffles!), stay open every hour of every day. After extreme weather, like floods, tornados and hurricanes, Waffle Houses are quick to reopen, even if they can only serve a limited menu. That makes them a remarkably reliable if informal barometer usually for weather damage but now for Covid-19! The index was invented by Craig Fugate, a former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2004 after a spate of hurricanes battered America’s east coast. “If a Waffle House is closed because there’s a disaster, it’s bad. We call it red. If they’re open but have a limited menu, that’s yellow. Fully functioning restaurants mean the index has gone green!”. Given that they have re-opened to meet Governor Kemp’s guidelines, we would argue a lite green, but green never the less!

If you are a Food Service owner operator and have been shut down for an extended period of time, Pentair Everpure has the following guidance for your water treatment system;

Filtration systems are designed to be operated on a continuous basis with only relatively short periods of down time (overnight and holidays). When a system is shut down for an extended period of time, there is a potential for microbiologic growth. To address concerns with system operation after the shutdown, please follow the below instructions. This is applicable to all Pentair filtration systems (i.e., pre-filters, carbon-based cartridges and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems).

Periodic Flushing In cases where the customer knows that the system will be down for an extended time and is able to get to the system on a periodic basis, follow the below flushing procedure every 3-4 days:

Filtration Systems
Flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
Empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain. For systems with multiple outlet ports, flush through all ports.
Shutdown for Less Than or Equal to 7 Days:

Filtration Systems
When you put the system back into operation, flush the system for a minimum of 5 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 5 minutes through all ports.
RO Systems
When you put the system back into operation, empty the tank through the outlet port until the pump turns on. Once the pump is on, flush the system for 10 minutes by letting the outlet water run to the drain and then proceed with normal operations. For the systems with multiple outlet ports, flush for a minimum of 10 minutes through all ports.

Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days:

All Systems (Filtration and RO)
Remove all existing filtration elements that are present in the system (pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges) and dispose. Disinfect the system as instructed in the applicable Installation and Operations Guide for that specific system.
After the disinfection process is complete, replace the filtration elements with all new pre-filters, carbon filters &/or RO cartridges. Flush the system as instructed in the applicable IO Guide to complete the procedure.

Softeners
Initiate a manual regeneration.
Shutdown for Greater Than 30 Days:
Softeners
Disinfect per the Installation and Operation Guide for that specific unit. Generally speaking, it is adding some bleach to the brine tank before initiating a manual regeneration.

Assumptions
Pentair assumes the following in providing this guidance: Incoming water is potable.

There is no boil-water advisory or boil-water order issued by the applicable public health or governmental authority.

System is being maintained within normal operating temperature and other conditions as set forth in the applicable specification sheet.

If you have concerns or cannot confirm these assumptions for the system, follow the instructions above under the section entitled “Shutdown for Greater Than 7 Days”.

Miami Beach Restaurant Re-Opening Plan!

Last Friday, April 24th, Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales sent a memorandum to members of the city’s Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee that outlines what he described as a “Resilient Recovery Plan” for the city, including restaurants.

Restaurant reopenings would proceed in two phases, according to the memo and additional information supplied by the Manager;

Phase one would allow restaurants to open with outdoor seating only at first, and would request that restaurants consider special hours to accommodate vulnerable populations. In addition, restaurants would operate at 50 percent capacity or require a minimum of six feet of space between tables. Employees would be required to work staggered shifts and wear masks, and hours would be reduced and menus limited. Restaurants would be required to implement measures to prevent servers and bussers to cross-contaminate tables. Establishments with liquor licenses could offer table service, but bars would remain closed to patrons.

Under phase two, restaurants would be allowed to relax social-distancing measures and increase capacity.

Until further notice, restaurants would be asked to supply straws for all drinks, reduce outside seating by 20 to 30 percent, increase airflow from the outside, use phone-app technology to take orders and receive payment, and operate on a reservations-only basis in order to stay within capacity limits.

Bars would not be allowed to open until phase two, when they would be allowed to operate with reduced standing-room occupancy and staggered work shifts and masks for employees. Pool tables and other touch devices (jukeboxes, games, and vending machines) would be off-limits. Plexiglas partitions would be required (the plan doesn’t specify where), as would increased airflow from outside and phone-app technology as with restaurants.

Florida Restaurant Opening Guidelines could look like Georgia’s.

Today, April 27, 2020 restaurants in Georgia are being allowed to open for Dine in operations. Governor Kemp released a list of 39 guidelines on Thursday evening for restaurants to meet what he calls “minimum basic operations.” Those guidelines require employees to wear masks or face coverings at all times, screening staff for COVID-19 symptoms and fevers over 100.4, staggering shifts, and spacing out tables and bar seating in the dining room to allow six feet between other seating arrangements. Additional guidelines include;

  • Allowing only ten patrons per 500 square feet in dining room, waiting area, bar area.
  • No self-service drink, utensil, or condiment stations
  • Encouraging the use of disposable menus
  • Discontinuing salad bars and buffets
  • Thoroughly sanitizing tables and any other commonly used items by guests
  • Using rolled silverware and no presetting of tables
  • Limiting parties to no more than six people per table
  • Encouraging reservation-only
  • Posting signs at the entrance stating no one is allowed in the restaurant who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or a fever over 100.4
  • Using contactless pay options when possible
  • Providing hand sanitizer or additional hand-washing stations for staff and patrons
  • Not allowing people to congregate in waiting areas
  • Prioritizing takeout and delivery over dine-in service when possible

Read the full executive order entitled “Providing guidance for reviving a healthy Georgia in response to COVID-19” here.

Govenor Ron Desantis is still reviewing recommendations from the re-opening Florida task force but is expected to outline his re-opening guidelines this week as the Governor’s “safer at home” order expires on this Thursday, April 30th.

Re-Open Florida Task Force to give recommendations to Governor on Friday for opening Restaurants and Hotels.

The panel charged with recommending how to restart businesses shuttered by DeSantis’ stay-at-home order includes the presidents of Disney World and Universal Orlando, airline and airport executives, the heads of several restaurants and hospitality groups, construction and real estate executives and mayors.

As Govenor Ron Desantis meets with his new Florida Re Opening Task force team, many Florida Restaurants are already starting to reopen using current safe distancing guidelines with take out or curbside only menus with an eye on bringing customers back inside as guidelines are put in place by the task force.

Georgia to reopen dining rooms next week! Getting ready to re-open? What about your water treatment system?

Georgia will become the first state to allow dine-in business after restaurants around the country were temporarily shuttered last month to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Georgia’s governor announced Monday that he plans to allow the state’s restaurant dining rooms to reopen at the beginning of next week. In addition to dining rooms, movie theaters and private social clubs will also be allowed to open next Monday.

Major water associations: Tap water is safe during COVID-19 outbreak

National Association of Water Companies, the American Water Works Association and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies issue joint statement.

As the global COVID-19 crisis continues to develop and reports of bottled water shortages make headlines, the National Association of Water Companies, the American Water Works Association and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies issued the following joint statement: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, America’s drinking water supplies remain a safe and affordable way to access the water needed for drinking, cooking and maintaining personal hygiene during the COVID-19 outbreak. Americans and Canadians can and should continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual as COVID-19 is not present in drinking water supplies. Disinfection processes like those practiced by water systems across the North America provide protection that includes filtration and disinfection of our surface water supplies and disinfection of our ground water sources. These treatments are effective in removing and/or inactivating viruses. Efforts by some to profiteer off of bottled water shortages are inexcusable, but drinking water consumers can avoid being taken advantage of by simply using the water that is available in their homes from the tap. To remove the disinfectants such as Chlorine, Chloramine and by products created by disinfection FP recommends the Everpure Residential line of products that will give you commercial grade purified water down to .5 micron. The same commercial quality that makes Pentair® Everpure the overwhelming choice for water filtration in restaurants is also available for your home. Pentair Everpure exclusive precoat filtration technology combines Micro-Pure® and a unique pleated filter membrane. Avoid all Covid 19 purified bottle water shortages and save our planet too!

It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil annually to make all the plastic bottles that meet America’s demand for bottled water. That’s enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, not including the oil used for transportation of those water bottles. After decades-long streak of strong growth, bottled water surpassed carbonated soft drinks to become the largest beverage category by volume in the United States in 2016, according to research and consulting firm Beverage Marketing Corp. Annual consumption of plastic bottles is set to top half a trillion by 2021, far outstripping recycling efforts and jeopardizing oceans, coastlines and other environments. A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change. Currently the average American uses more than167 disposable water bottles annually. Altogether, Americans’ use over 50 billion plastic water bottles a year. The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 a day. That same amount of bottled water is about $1,400 a year, but keep in mind that people prefer bottled water because it taste great! So, how does one cut out all the plastic bottles from their life but still get great tasting water straight from their tap? By purchasing a high performance drinking water system, that goes under your kitchen sink from Everpure! The same commercial quality that makes Pentair® Everpure the overwhelming choice for water filtration in restaurants is also available for your home. Avoiding Coronavirus or the Flu stay hydrated to stay healthy!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, water helps your body with a number of functions, including regulating body temperature. Dr. Simone Wildes, an infectious disease specialist at South Shore Hospital in Boston agrees: “Hydration is always good; it helps with all bodily functions.” People can usually meet their fluid needs by drinking water when they are feeling thirsty and drinking with meals. Your body requires more water when you are running a fever, are more physically active or have diarrhea or vomiting. Approximately 70% of the human body is water and none of the essential physical functions, such as breathing, digestion, or muscle movement could take place without water and more than likely you are not drinking enough of it. Want to save the planet from disposable plastic water bottles and have plenty of fresh “Micro Pure” clean water for you and your family. Check out this years line up of Everpure Designer Residential Water Filter Systems.

Valentines Day 2020 Reminder! Is your water Sweetheart Ready?

Valentine’s Day, the second biggest dining day of the year is coming up this Friday, February 14th and according to the National Restaurant Association more than 70 million people will be dining out at their favorite restaurant this year. If you have a water filtration system in your restaurant you’ll want to make sure that the water filters have been changed and that the system is operating perfectly so that your water makes a wonderful first impression. The frequency of filter changes depends upon your water quality and your water usage. For example, if there is a lot of sediment and/or particles in your water, then you will have to change your filters more frequently than a location with little to no sediment. Be sure to replace your filters whenever you notice a decline in the performance, whether it is a drop in flow rate and/or pressure or an unusual taste in the water. Also note the following if you have one of our Everpure High Flow Systems like the incredibly popular and top selling EV9437-10 pictured below;

More information on the EV9437-10 Quad High Flow System;

  • Prefilter
    The prefilter (coarse) cartridge should be changed when it becomes dirty to within 1/8″ of the core or when you see the outlet pressure gauge fall into the red zone. Check the pressure gauge only when the equipment is calling for water.
  • Submicron Cartridges
    The cartridges should be changed at the first occurrence of a) the gallon rating stated on the label, b) every 6 months, or c) the pressure gauge needle falls into the red zone while your equipment is calling for water.
  • ScalestickTM
    The Scalestick needs to be replaced before the Hydroblend compound is completely used up.

Happy Valentines Day and please call us directly with any specific questions at 800-942-7873 or email us at info@filterpure.com.

Americans exposed to “Forever” toxic chemicals in drinking water ‘dramatically underestimated’: report

Tap Water in the United States is contaminated with toxic fluorinated chemicals at a higher rate than previously thought, according to a new report. “It’s nearly impossible to avoid contaminated drinking water from these chemicals,” David Andrews, a senior scientist at Environmental Working Group and co-author of the report published Wednesday, said. “Forever chemicals,” also known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are resistant to breaking down and may affect far more than the 110 million Americans estimated in the Environmental Working Group’s 2018 report based on unpublished U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data. Some of the chemicals are known to cause cancer, liver damage, low birth weight and other health problems. “The results confirm that the number of Americans exposed to PFAS from contaminated tap water has been dramatically underestimated by previous studies, both from the Environmental Protection Agency and EWG’s own research,” the report said. Some of the highest levels were found in Miami, Philadelphia, New Orleans, northern New Jersey and New York City suburbs. The manmade chemicals were used in products like Scotchguard, Teflon and in firefighting foam, Reuters reported. The group took tap water samples from 44 places in 31 states and found only Meridian, Miss., which draws its drinking water from wells, had no traceable amounts of the chemicals. Only Seattle and Tuscaloosa, Ala. had less than one part per trillion, which the group recommends. The EPA has known about the contamination for 19 years but has not yet set a nationwide standard, according to a recent Reuters article . According to Wikipedia, A perfluorinated compound (PFC) is an organofluorine compound containing only carbon-fluorines and C-C bonds but also other heteroatoms. One example is perfluorooctanoic acid, which functions as a carboxylic acid, but with strongly altered surfactant and hydrophobic characteristics.[1] Fluorosurfactants are ubiquitously used in teflon, water resistant textiles and fire-fighting foam. Certain technologies have been found to remove PFAS from drinking water, especially Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), which are the most studied of these chemicals. Those technologies include activated carbon adsorption, ion exchange resins, and high-pressure membranes. These technologies can be used in drinking water treatment facilities, in water systems in hospitals or individual buildings, or even in homes at the point-of-entry, where water enters the home, or the point-of-use, such as in a kitchen sink or a shower. Activated carbon treatment is the most studied treatment for PFAS removal. Activated carbon is commonly used to adsorb natural organic compounds, taste and odor compounds, and synthetic organic chemicals in drinking water treatment systems. Adsorption is both the physical and chemical process of accumulating a substance, such as PFAS, at the interface between liquid and solids phases. Activated carbon is an effective adsorbent because it is a highly porous material and provides a large surface area to which contaminants may adsorb. Activated carbon (GAC) is made from organic materials with high carbon contents such as wood, lignite, and coal; and is often used in granular form called granular activated carbon (GAC).

The Everpure H-300- NXT is the first of its kind to be certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI Standard 401, to reduce even pharmaceuticals that may be found in your water. These contaminants include: some pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, herbicides, pesticides and chemicals used in manufacturing like bisphenol A (BPA). The Pentair Everpure exclusive precoat filtration technology combines Micro-Pure* and a unique pleated filter membrane that is 30% larger than the H-300 filter. Comparable to our top selling H-300, with added benefits to help give your family peace of mind.
